Lesser known backyard visitors (continued):

According to Nigel (Merlin) and to Harm's (Harm-Digitaal) pictures this is a male Provençal short-tailed blue (Lepidoptera; Lycaeidae; Cupido (=Everes) alcetas and not Everes decoloratus), sitting on Lotus corniculatus. I checked with the cartographic service of Neuchâtel, CSCF and found out that my hometown is just at the Eastern ditribution border of the species. The dark spot on the underside of the hind wing near the tail, the black rim and the black veins on the upper side of the forewings are not indicated in Collins Butterfly Guide (T. Tolman & R. Lewington).

Hi Dietrich!

Very nice macro of this lesser known Lycaenidae. Good side POV and perfect composition of yellow and silver blue colours. I don't know butterflies of Austria, but it looks quite similiar to Cupido alcetas. Good work!

Hello Dietrich,
Nice macro and fine shapness whit good composition.. your butterfly is very attentive..
TFS
Best regards
Özgür

Sorry, Dietrich, can't help you with the identification but, I can say what a fine capture this is! I love the big, bold close-up, showing the fine details of the wings and body. The narrow dof makes an unobtrusive b/g behind the sharp image of the butterfly and flowers.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello again, Dietrich.

Sometimes field guides can be deceptive, as there is quite a lot of variation by geography, season and age. This is almost certainly alcetas by use of Occam's Butterfly Field Guide (apologies - field biologist humour ;) and experience. Fortunately, we have a good reference source here on TN as long as we strive to keep identifications as accurate as possible. I would point you to: -

Upperside view from Sergio.

Underside view from Harm.

Harm in particular is outstandingly accurate in his identifications.

Photographically, I cannot criticise this - nice lighting, good depth of field and nice composition - it's all good!

Best wishes, Nigel.

Lieber Dieter,
Bravo!
Alles liebe
Anne

Hello Dietrich,

A superb image. You've filled the frame with this little beauty and its attractive perch, very sharp with excellent detail. Even though flash was used, the light has a soft quality, perfect for this subject. Did you soften the flash somehow?

Thanks,
John

Ciao Dietrich, wonderful composition with lovely cupido on a beautiful flower, splendid natural colors, excellent sharpness, very well done, have a good week end, ciao Silvio
