Long-legged backyard inhabitants (1)

You might think this to be a Crane fly, but no. It is rather an Ocellated Gnat (Diptera; Limoniidae; Epiphragma ocellaris (L.); Augen-Stelzmücke). The gnat reaches 18 mm body length. The gnat lives on the ground in humid deciduous forests.

ID: the wing pattern is unmistakable for the species. For ID I consulted besides some literature also www.commanster.eu/commanster.html (J.Lindsay). Limoniidae have 14-16 segmented antennae, Tipulids have only 13 segments.

Technical stuff: ground living animals are poorly lighted in their natural environment. A flash tends to illuminate the background too much. I choose to have one flash from behind the animal, the other from the side to preserve the desirable darkness of the background.

Hi Dietrich,
Yes long legs are interesting and add beauty.Well caught, framed and composed.
Thanks for posting..

Hallo Dieter!

As liebs Grüessli

Markus

Hello Dietrich,
An excellent capture of this species of Gnat, the striking diagnostic wing pattern shown with fine sharpness and lighting. Other features like the halteres show well too.
I must say, until I read your note I though that this was a Tipulid, though the segments of the abdomen are different, apart from the number of segments of the antennae.
Thanks for posting this fine image and the informative note!
best regards,
Ivan

Lieber Dieter,
Ja, da lernt man doch jedesmal etwas!
Anne

Hi Dietrich,

A powerful macro capture of the long-legged crane fly with great details!
The textures are wonderfully shown. The sharpness and POV are well done here showing natural colors. The green leaves give great contrast to the subject.

Well done composition!
