[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note

You're the lightplay of the sadness,
The grave of the Holy Graal,
Mystic and mysterious,
Even so nothing – but a mind-eating mirror
Melting to follow the crowd…

This strange surface of ice is very thin, it's perhaps 2 or 3 mm thick. There's also not much water under it, maybe 10cm. The sun shines on it or better through it and depending on the composition of the underground, the light is reflected with different colours: the bright part in the picture is a stone, almost white and clean, the darker parts are stones covered with algae and mud.

I took the picture in the middle of the afternoon after a cold night. But the sun made the river swell up and a fine layer of water began to cover the icy surface. I was fascinated by this effect and lost myself in thoughts that the lonely encounter with this ephemeral phenomenon brought on.

Taken in RAW, basic corrections in Camera RAW (levels, colour temperature, sharpness). Then import into PS CS4 and final postprocessing.

The photographed surface is about 12cm large.

Kind regards

Hi Markus,

It's hard to believe this is just a rock covered with ice! It looks so alive. The feathery patterns and textures are wonderful. One wonders how they could appear. The colors and shadings are beautiful. Whenever I look at one of your photographs I wonder if I would have seen it had I been there. Sadly, probably not.

Hi Markus
This looks like a painting, with textured brush marks in every direction. You captured an original by mother nature. I really like both the colours and composition.
TFS Janice

Hi Markus!

Sometimes I'm so amazed at your pictures I can hardly know what to say.. Displaying such a common thing as ice in a way that it touches the viewer right away and makes one start thinking about it (and photography in general and that's rare) is a gift that only a few have. Still, you're way of seeing things always leads me to the conclusion that it's always worth to look with an open mind.
Does it make sense? For me it does :) so TFS!

Hello Markus,
Without your note I would never have guessed how you could achieve such a shot!
The light coloured area of the linestone in the middle provides a superb BG for the ice crystals: artificial lighting could not have been better.
Their crystalline structure is well seen and presented and the dark area makes a wonderful inner frame.
Nice work and thanks for sharing it.

Kind regards,

Ciao Markus,
un'altra affascinante e misteriosa immagine di queste particolari strutture di ghiaccio che per il diverso fondale creano questi meravigliosi giochi di luce e di ombra, ottima definizione e splendid colori naturali.
Grazie e complimenti
Buon pomeriggio
Con amicizia
Ciao maurizio

Hi Markus.
I remember your wonderful winter and ice picture all time. In our rare cold days I find similar subject. Unfortunately I have not your talent to see such things. Amazing play of lights and darks. Superb reproduction of structure and coldness of the ice. Bravo and many thanks for warm welcome of my rare winter shot.
Yours Alexei.

Hy Markus
Hm, what I can say about this one! You are still continuing with the abstract images.I never know that ice could take such nice pattern, but I am discovering now. You took a quite perpendicular image on the surface of the ice...how it was possible?

Hi Markus,

When I see your thambnail photo, I thought it could be a cross section from a stone or a peace pigeon:). Thanks for making me a smile.. As always you did, this is utterly awesome nature art MF!
TFS and have a nice night!

Hi Markus.

Interesting texture of ice. A different looking at the environment. It must be the difference between "looking" and "seeing". Bravo and TFS.

Hi Markus

Another exceptional winter abstract / macro photo from you, my friend!
Actually, even before reading your note i know this was thin and somewhat fresh ice...i've seen it just the same in my dog's water bowl this season :)
But yours here has a totally different and unique BG. The light is special and looks like coming from behind...like it has some special tale to tell...
The texture and details are really well reproduced here and that shows good photographic quality, but it's the simple composition and the framing that shows a good artist.
Wonderful work once again my friend!

Bravo and TFS
