Le Lézard vert habite l'Europe centrale et méridionale atteignant 50 cm dans le Sud et seulement 30 dans le Centre. Il vit dans des endroits chauds et rocheux; très bon grimpeur, très leste, il est donc difficile à capturer. Il est habituellement vert brillant, avec ou sans taches noires, et le mâle montre une gorge bleue. D'octobre à avril il se tient dans des terriers pouvant atteindre 1 m.
