POLISTES DOMINULA

European Paperwasp
Gallische Feldwespe
Poliste gaulois

Family: Vespidae
Size: 11-15mm
Habitat:Open spaces, meadows, bushes, close to human habitat
Distribution:N'Africa, S-and Central-Europe, temperate Asia

This species is also in its way to North. In N'Germany it usd to be unknown a few years ago and arrived there now too.

The European paper is one of the more common and well-known species of social wasps in Europe. Polistes dominula is often referred to as the European Paper Wasp because of its native distribution and its nests, which are constructed from paper and saliva. Its diet is more versatile than that of most Polistes species, consisting of many genera of insects. The dominant females (queens) are the principal egg layers, while the subordinate females (auxiliaries) primarily forage and do not lay eggs. This hierarchy is not permanent; when the queen is removed from the nest, the second-most dominant female assumes the role of the queen.(Wikipedia)

Anne,
So colourful, beautiful, and peaceful "looking"; yet, they can be quite aggressive when meddled with.
Their sting delivers an excruciating pain and it stays for hours.
Moreover, unlike the bee that dies after it stings, the wasp continues on with its life as if nothing had happened.
A well presented image.
Loved your educative notes.
Best and most kind regards from,
Mario in Canada.

Hi Anne,
Axcellent macro shot, amazing colours with excellent focus on the head. Very good composition
and background are too very nice.
Regards Jiri.

Looks like a tired boxer, Anne, ha, ha, ha!
On the serious note, a very sharp macro of this Wasp with rich colours on it.
The green leaf provides apt contrast to its predominantly yellow and black colours.
Thanks and regards.
