[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a Perla marginata larva (Great stonefly, Grosse Steinfliege, le Grand plécoptère) which lives in clear streams under the stones. I took it while walking to Pilatus near Luzern. Plecoptera larvae have two cerci, never three like the Ephemeroptera larvae and the tubelike gills are distributed over the body.

The 2 cm animal was taken home and put in a glass dish and two flashes used, one from below and one from above, each at an angle. To get rid of air bubbles I applied a vacuum. The slide (from 1967) was scanned and treated in Photoshop to get rid of background impurities and to sharpen it.

Hello Dietrich,
You are weakening my resolve to avoid studio shots, but when I think about it, you can't take meaningful photographs of aquatic insect larvae without taking them to the lab.
So you deserve credit for this old, but well treated shot of a stonefly larva.
I must try to take shots of adult stoneflies next summer!
TFS, best wishes, Ivan

Hallo Dietrich,
