Hi Alexei,

CONGRATULATIONS on one year! You have given as much to TN as you have received. I have enjoyed your photos and notes.

I am saddened for you about the impact that political changes have brought to your homeland in the past 15 years. You represent the best of the old USSR. I am glad you are finding some joy in photography. It has also brought me joy after a difficult time.

This is a very interesting post of the large moth. The colors are beautiful. Yet another gift of nature that we should all take time to appreciate. Great details visible with your excellent focus and the perfect exposure.

Congratulations on your first year on TN: your skills as a photographer are much appreciated by many of us on TN and we are grateful for your notes and critiques.

I find your note touching and it expresses a feeling and desire that many of us on TN share.
We need to be close to nature and photography is one way of expressing that need. It is also enriched by contacts throughout the world through TN. In this way, as you say, we are one big family. So I thank you, my friend, for expressing it.

Now to this wonderful sharp and well presented shot of a Peacock Moth: you are right, this is a Saturnia species, but not pavonia.
This is the Greater Peacock Moth, Saturnia pyri, found in Southern and Eastern Europe.

Hello Alexei,
We are all touched by what you write here and the way you present it. That you mention also the international and familiar aspect of TN, is wonderful. I also see that you are very concerned by what happens in your country. We from outside just can follow a minimum and we see that there is a big struggle for power, we just hope that there will be a positive end.
The picture you have chosen for your first anniversary on TN is great. This Greater Peacock moth is one I'm looking for since quite a long time, without never finding it. So at least, there it is , in all its beauty.

When I first joined TN I thought it a bit strange the way people called each other "friends" and "our big family" but with time I've become totally involved and the sense of togetherness here is amazing. You get to know people by seeing what they see and by interpreting what they write and I'm glad I've got to know you!

The picture you've chosen to commemorate this great day is terrific. This moth is so beautiful and your capture on the Lilac is brilliant! (I must tell you that this moth once landed on my shoe when walking through a village in Spain. We've got an old picture of it and it was nearly as big as my shoe!!)

Hi Alexei

Probably i can understand you better than most. I know what you mean about the USSR and about communism. It did have its advantages.
Here, too, a lot of things have changed and the future for young people is less than certain anymore. I can speak more from that point of view because it's my case. Sometime ago, if you graduated from college with good grades, you would get a good and secure job. Now...you can still be unemployed. :(

Anyway, i'm glad to hear that you are having such a good time here with us :) Let me assure you that the feeling is mutual and that your presence here is definitely noticed and cherished by many members.

This is a splendid capture of this interesting and very big moth.
It really appears huge only by looking at the picture :)
The details here are excellent and the colors (both the moth and the flower) are lovely.
The pattern (with the "eyes" on the wings) is really amazing and i also love the diagonal composition that you so nicely have created.

Dear Alexei,
what a great luck, and amazingly beautiful capture of Europe's largest Emperor Moth, the Great Peacock Saturnia pyri! Exciting to see it perfectly situated on a bunch of lilac to remember us of the time of year it is around to spend its short life as a moth.
Not able to take in any food, but totally depending on its reserves of fat from the larval stage, it would not live longer than just a few days.
The composition is very well done with great artistic feeling. For eyes designed to shock predators are looking down on us in a charming way, inviting us to celebrate your first year with us here on TN. All the best to you my dear friend, good to have you here. My congratulations.

First of all big congratulations for 1st year on TN and for this amazing picture. This is probably most beautifull moth I've ever seen!

Now about your note. I was also born in communist country' like you or Horia. I remember those times well - everyone has a job and [not much] money, people helped each other, life sometimes was more joyfull. But after transformation into free market country everything changed. Beggars on street, unemplyement, skyrocketing prices. To the other hand endless possibilities to make money, freedom of speech, membership of EU and NATO, possibility to travell to every place in world. I liked my old Poland [maybe because I was child] and I like present one, too. This isn't place to discuss such things - this is start to long mail :-) Anyway,I think we can't divide people into Russians, Ukrainians, Poles or Americans. Rather into good and bad people. I know many stupid and rude Poles, but also I know hundreds of great ones. I was in Ukraine and met many great friends [and few less great ;-)]. Same situation in Romania, Bulgaria or any other country which I visited. Look at TN - it is like one, big, worldwide family! It brings hope that good people live in every country in our world!

Congrats for your first year in TN. You gave to this site all the beauty of your outstanding photos as well as the love for nature with your proficience in thecnical skills making you one of the most fantastic photographers I ever meet!
I am full agree with your notes about the drama Ukrania has suffered in the last years...I am friend of some ukranian people immigrants in Portugal...people sometimes with a superior education(medical doctors,engineers,scientists...)working hard in the most basic jobs here in Portugal,jobs that most of us in the confort of our UE country refuse to do...I can´t even imagine what a ukranian economist feels working as a simple restaurant servant and getting no more the minimum salary(500 € )!...and many others cought in the russian mafias and explored as sexual slaves!...but people with a fantastic will to win the adversity and to struggle for a better life...I must say I admire these Ukranians men and women,what a lesson they give to all of us !
(ukranians are the most numerous immigrant community in Portugal,just second to brazilians)

What a touching and heartfelt note. I am sad for your countries problems but there is always hope when there are people who care. TN is a wonderful community. As for the photo - you have captured a lovely shot of this moth. I used to have a phobia about moths which was cured when I started to photograph them and realised how beautiful they are. Lovely composition, nicely sharp and lovely colours

Dear Alexei,
it's a privilege to answer after reading your touching note. First my congratulations for your 1st anniversary, young man! Let me simply say that what you and me experience in TN is the Anglosaxon way of Science teaching that many professors including me have also adopted at my University in Switzerland. In this, the students are encouraged to take initiatives, to develop ideas, to try them out, make experiments to prove their value, to convince the others of the quality of their ideas, to discuss it with us professors. Of course at the end there are still grades given (like the TN points); they provide a framework for the whole quite chaotic enterprise; sometimes it's just "passed" or "failed"; these grades depend to some extent on the reactions of the colleague-students. Our students react like you react to TN: they feel being taken seriously, they get heavily involved in the subjects and learn enourmously by doing, making mistakes, restarting, thinking, asking for help, writing everything up,reporting, taking responsibilities etc. People that insist to be told every hour what they have to do or learn are shocked by our method and go elsewhere for studies!

I like about TN that you can "meet" people all over the world who share the same love for nature and making pictures.

Nice capture of the moth on a very nice coloured flower. Nice composition and diagonal pose of your model. Good focus and sharpness on the entire moth.

Hello Alexei,
I fear that it is not only your country that has fallen prey to the greedy. This is happening all over the world, I see it in my own country and in my newly adopted home too. I read about it in every newspaper I pick up, it's a global disease.

I'm very happy that you have found reprieve in the form of TN, a place where the ugliness of politics cannot reach and people can co-exist in happiness.

As for your image, it's a great one. Fantastic detail and exposure and a nice composition too, the angle of the Moth and the lines of the background colours are very pleasing. I think the colours seem a little dull, I might boost saturation and add a little more contrast, but that is perhaps just my preference.

Again I'm glad you are happy at TN, you have become a great contributor to the site and I hope you are here for many years to come.

Congratulations for your first year in TN. The image you´ve chosen for celebreate is almost perfect, magnific, terrific...
I have leido your note with much interest. Although something of information I have on the Soviet Union and I have inquired on the shortages and actuality of your country in an article of National Geographic with many indicators of the policy and social situation, are as soon as tiny part of which it must be your reality in the Ukraine. Although the system of powers is different in Argentina I feel identified with you because here we have been with shortages for more time, but with the advance of the globalizatión and Capitalism people also lost its works and savings. For 3 years we have been recovering slowly. I´m glad that my presence in TN contributes with something positive to the life of so distant people in km but near in the love by the life and nature.

I was first attracted by your photo and then moved by the note. Having you on TN for a year was enriching to all TN members. I'm Polish so partly I understand your feelings about the transformation. Anyway, no matter how bitter you feel about certain things, there are always things in the world that can bring comfort to you, and it is never too late to pursue your passions and interests, especially if there are so many people who appreciate your work and talent.

I almost overlooked this beauty photo... and I do not know why :(
I like a lot the composition wich together with great colours and DOF make a fantastic picture. Bravo also for the object - I have never seen this species as the adult in the wild - only caterpillars.
And last but not least my best congratulation because of the 1st year on TN! Maybe a little to late, but as we talk in Poland: better later than never ;>
Of course I wish you another 10 years with TN adventure!
