It is my first Skipper picture here. Why – that is the question.

Skipper is not rare species in our region. However, I almost have no pictures of the species. They are so small, very mobile and sit on flowers or ground a moment only. They also often visit not very attractive flowers as I could notice. Shooting of the skippers demands the skill, which I probably have not. Nevertheless my persistence was rewarded and I managed to picture this beauty at very nice scenery. Therefore let me introduce Mallow Skipper (if I am not mistaken) which lives near my countryside house.

Carcharodus alceae

Distribution: Across Europe except UK and Scandinavia. Replaced in SW Iberian peninsular and some Greek islands by the False Mallow Skipper, C. tripolinus. Altitude: sea level to 2000m.

Identification: Small hyline (transparent) spots on forewing. Dark grey brown on ups. Uns hw with post discal arc of small chevrons, no discal arc, cell spot large and isolated from other markings. Similar species are the False Mallow Skipper, C. tripolinus (these two species are externally inseparable, identification is by the male genitalia) and the Marbled Skippers in the same genus.

Flight time: flies in the warmer months, from April to October in the south, in several broods. Disappears between broods.

Habitat: Lush to very dry grassy places often with flowers and amongst scrub or woodland. Larvae take Malva sylvestris and other plants.

Behaviour: Flies rapidly low over the ground. It shows some signs of territorial behaviour, often patrolling the same corner of a field or stretch of woodland path and disappearing in a whirring battle for a few moments when challenged by other passing skippers or butterflies.

Additional notes: Usually this or the Grizzled Skipper is the first skipper I find during the year. Quite variable but usually distinctive. It has a different jizz to the similar Marbled Skippers, and generally it is also a little smaller.

Source: Mallow Skipper.

Hello Alexei,
What a poetical and fine shot. The Skipper (I think you are right with ID) has been taken in its best pose and your chosen framing is excellent. I like the way you include the neighbour-flower partly, which makes the shot so special. Very fine sharpness too.
Very original picture.
Best regards

Ciao Alexei,
splendida immagine di Carcharodus alceae (credo sia giusta l'ID.) catturato con un'eccellente definizione in una bellissima composizione per la posa ad ali aperte e per i vividi colori dei fiori, magnifico il contrasto con lo stupendo OOF BG.

Hello Alexei,
Congratulations on not only your first Skipper shot but also for the fine capture of this species of skipper, the Mallow skipper, the ID of which you got spot on!
The sharpness and quality of this shot is so good that it would also make a fine species portrait from this open-wing dorsal POV and you could crop it for that purpose. But this as Anne says, has also an artistic quality, the half flower in the corner radiating out towards the rest of the image and the skipper as a way of displaying it.
Thanks for sharing this beauty: I wish we had this species in my country!
Kind regards,

Hello Alexei,
I'm surprised you've kept this away from us for so long!! It is a really brilliant capture of the Mallow Skipper! Excellent focus and the markings and colours are shown very clearly and the colours are beautiful and it stand out from the light background. A lovely composition too - I'm glad you included the pretty flower still in bloom.
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Alexei
the butterfly is perfectly in focusing on a background very neutral that very puts in prominence the depth of the photo. Optimal contrast on the colourful flower and clear details.

Hi Alexei,

nice shot from this butterfly and flower.
good composition with beautiful colour.

Really your first skipper!? wow...Well you sure waited until you had the absolute perfect timing...all is well...crisp, clear, coloured in complimenting tonals...it is VERY sharp...this one impresses me no less than most of your work which is not only technically great but aesthetically good as well.

Privet Alex,
What and interesting way to present this Skipper.
At first glance it seems that the colorful flower to the lower right will catch our attention, but then you realize the exquisite focus and lighting on the real subject, that becomes so enjoyable to look at.
All the elements here have the proper treatment, DOF works great.
My compliments and thanks for share.

Hi Alexei,

It is probably your first Skipper picture because you were waiting for a very special setting. The butterfly is perfect in color and detail and although it is posed on a flower that has seen better days, the neighboring flower is fantastic. Only a fine photographer and artistic talent could envision this wonderful composition.

Hello Alexei

what beautiful shot of your first Skipper, with fine POV, DOF
and framing, excellent luminosity, excellent sharpness
and details, i love the excellent density of the colours, TFS

Hello my friend Alexei,
Thank you for your excellent shot on your first Skipper here in this site!
compliment for it's quality in sharpness and colour!
You had achieved the best lighting that I loved very much! and that piece of colourful flower makes this image so pleasant to view and enjoy!
Sincerely wishing you a coming happy new year!

Hallo Alexei
Congratulations on your first and hopefully not your last skipper images. A lovely arrangement of colours on one image. The display of colours are gorgeous and composition perfect. I like the feeling of harmony I experience looking at this image. The tiny butterfly looks great with the almost dark rustic reddish brown flower, and is a great match. You have shared a very nice shot with excellent composition and framing. Thanks for sharing. I agree with your wording in your note:"Nevertheless my persistence was rewarded and I managed to picture this beauty at very nice scenery". Indeed a beauty!
Enjoy your day.
ps. You really underestimate your photographic abilities. Your images and quality of work are always an inspiration to me.

Hi Alex!

It's quite difficult to dive into your picture because we have deep winter atmosphere here and a lot of snow! So I first had to get used to the splendid colours and the warm summer ambience of your picture. The butterfly is shown with great details on a lovely flower and the whole picture is well composed and pleasant. I also like the detailed notes.

Hello Alexei,

superb sharpnes and depth of feild, wonderful
details and lovely oof background.

Hello Alexei,

It may be small but you have captured with very fine, accurate details. It is perfectly posed on the almost dead head of the flower. (Is it a gaillardia?)
I like how you have included a segment of a second flower in the frame. It gives a nice balance.

Kind regards,

Hi Alexei
Beautiful composition of this butterfly, good colors and details. You make a good job with the lighting.

Dear Alexei,
a wonderful presentation of the Mallow Skipper, perfectly describing its drab colours that usually are making it almost invisible at rest. Here on your picture, it stands out in its noble subtlety against the bright red and orange flowers. The distant background structures add a very pleasant atmosphere and dynamics.
Thank you my dear friend. With all my best wishes to you!

Hi Alexei

Wow, what a brilliant posting. I've seldom seen an image where a skipper opened up its wings so beautifully to be captured. The total presentation is in wonderful harmony – colour wise, exposure wise, subject wise (especially with relation to the flower at the lower right hand corner),aesthetical, visually and also technically.

Well done MF and TFS.

PS. Pardon me for my short comment as I am rather pushed for time this year. It is more important that I want to thank you for the friendship you extended to me (and Anna) this past 2008. Also, I want to wish you and your loved ones a joyous Christmas and a wonderful New Year. May this Christ-fest and the imminent 2009 bring you everything that is beautiful and admirable, provide all your needs with blissful exuberance, present you with that which is edifying and inspiring, grant you blessed peace and harmony, and bestow upon you a myriad of worthwhile pleasures and breathtaking moments with close friends and dear family.

Hello Alexei !
Wow, wonderful little Skipper you managed to capture here ! I love the markings on its wings, must be a very efficient camouflage when he's sitting on a tree. Excellent details, and I also like the way you have composed your picture, as well as the blurred BG with lovely colors. The flower in the lower right corner adds a nice touch of beauty and color. Very well done !

Hi Alexei,
Outstanding shot of this tiny Mallow Skipper with immaculate sharpness and clarity of details on its wings. The flower are the right hand corner adds so much colour to the image and makes it look fabulous. Perfect lighting and DOF. Excellent composition.

GREAT EDUCATIVE NOTE, Alexei, my dear TN friend.
We have a very 'similar' type of species, at least, in BEHAVIOUR.
They also 'look' quite identicle; but, are not. I do have a sample within my library...... wonder where it is? If I find it I'll dedicate it to you. Is that a deal???
Lovely image. They are difficult to register. They hardly ever stop. Good job on this one.
Congratulations from Mario in Calgary.

Privet Alexei,
While looking at the queue, it's strange to realize how great place TrekNature once was and how bad nowadays the members are much less active. I found a lot of great photographers here who have gone from here. However, the photo you present is wonderful. I love the composition with only the half of the Gaillardia in the foreground (but it gives a fantastic color gamut), while the skipper is tack sharp, the details are awesome. Very, very spectacular image. Probably, imho, with just a little tighter crop on the top and on left it might even be more powerful, although this is just a personal opinion. DoF is also fantastic - as the whole image. Incredible pleasancy. Huge, huge thanks and congratulations. I hope you're well at this moment and your inactive period will be over soon.
Besst regards, László
