This shot describes a full capacity of my equipment. I am really cannot achieve more magnification level with macro lens AF-S 105 mm f2.8 VR + 2x teleconverter TC20EIII.

The concept of diffraction-limited is well known (see, for example, Diffraction-limited system). There is an opinion that the diffraction-limited comes at f/8 – f/11 (depending on pixel size of APS-C or FF sensors) and photographers often suppose that smaller aperture values are unusable. In these reasonings there is one small inaccuracy. When the diffraction-limited is reached quality of the image begins to degrade only. The key question is how quickly the image quality degrades with decreases the aperture values. That is why everyone should decide, what aperture to use, being based on personal experience and own equipment.

My personal opinion is such small aperture values as f/25 – f/32 (36) on Nikon D700 (cameras with large pixel) are quite usable (at least to glance in eyes to this tiny creature).

A cute representative of Pentatomidae is pictured. See also another view of the species (Workshop).

Hello Alexei,
Incredible macro in superb sharpness, details and beautiful colours. Good use of flash. Nice diagonal composition. The workshop photo is very nice too.

Great macro post. I like the sharpness, detail and lighting that shows the subject off very well. The tight compsoition is also good for me as it compliments the detailed subject.

Hello Alexei,
To take such a fine close macro of the head of a Pentatomid Bug takes not only expert photographic experience and good equipment, but a good steady hand when not using a tripod.
You have all three qualities.
The details are fantastic and the use of flash highlights them well without disturbing reflections.
Thanks for sharing this fine piece of work!
Best regards,

Hello Alex,
This is really an extreme portrait!! Most interesting to see all thes details of the head of this Pentomidae-species. Well composed too with the diagonal presentation and of course perfect sharpness. Interesting!
Kind regards

Privet Alexei,
Firstly, when seeing the photo in thumbnail, I thought it's a stomach of a frog. When opened the image, I started to gasp: never saw such an extreme portrait! Than read your note: what an educational and interesting one! This is how a post should be, by my opinion. Pleasant composition with brilliant technicality. Interesting subject, not the everyday cup of tea. And last but not least: a personal note which helps a lot to the viewer. Dear Friend, you're a real treasure of the site. Come more often to TN if your sparetime allows.
Best regards, László

Hello Alexei,
Without looking at the workshop picture you really wonder what kind of monster this is!! Two fantastic and educational macros showing interesting details of this bug very sharply. I like both pictures very much! Well done!
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hi Alexei,
this is what I call a sharp macro-shot, every details are well seen. I amazed you could get this with 2.0x converter.
Even the cells in the eyes of the stink bug are well seen.
Diffraction is probably not visible in this small pictures but with larger I'm quite sure with can see the sharpness will decrease.
Well done, old friend.
Have a great WE.

Hallo Alexei,

Hello Alexei,
Reading your notes was an eye-opener to me and many thanks. A lesson well explained and made understandable to me!!! A Fantastic macro with the smallest of detail as seen under a microscope. Consider yourself a "Diamond" in my book with regards to macro photography!!! Truly an extreme macro in all photographic aspects to my knowledge. This is the type of information and explanation I have been looking for since I joined TN. Excellent tutorial work done here my friend. I do not have the correct words to describe my feelings other than "Salute" and "Bravo"!!!

Hi Alexei,

thank you for your kind remarks on my latest pictures. I love the picture of the bug head a lot. It shows your (well known) mastery of the macro technique. To enlarge more would mean a complete change of technique, equipment and experience. I tried years ago with a stand and a bellow but I had to almost kill the insect for proper focussing ! "Keep still you bugger".

My best regards to you, Dietrich
