[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Until now I had rather modest capabilities to take birds pictures. My first camera Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D had 6 MP only. Present camera Nikon D700 has about 5 MP at crop mode. However, a key point is the special feature of my telelens Nikkor AF-S 70-200 f2.8 VRII, which has about 130 mm focal length instead 200 mm at MDF (minimal focusing distance) and about 225 mm with 2x teleconverter instead 400 mm. At bird distances actual focal length of my telelens set is also less than 400 mm significantly and, as a result, magnification level is also too low.

Unlike the combo Nikon D700+70-200/2.8+TC2.0 my new small crop camera Sony SLT-A57 has 16 MP and “old” telelens Minolta 100-400 APO has 320 mm at MDF. Using this equipment, I became closer to birds.

This small beauty (Common Redstart) is a frequent guest of our garden. It is a swift bird and I could not take decent shots of the species before. Now I have changed the situation for the better.

The Common Redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus), or often simply Redstart, is a small passerine bird in the redstart genus Phoenicurus. Like its relatives, it was formerly classed as a member of the Thrush family (Turdidae), but is now known to be an Old World flycatcher (Muscicapidae)…

More info about the species you can find here Common_Redstart.

Hi Alex, this is a bad new for me,as you know i prefere your butterflies and not birds....ahahahha.....but i must to give you my best compliments for this great capture of this redstart, the quality is really the best, fantastic details, colors and exposure, and it seems that it turn the head only for you and your camera for the best result..eeehe....very well done, have an hot day like in Milano,Luciano

I do not fully understand the technicalities of lens and converter combinations that you mention in your note, Alexei. However, one thing is very clear: for nature photographer of your high calibre, obtaining the best possible results is the ultimate goal and you have done it here with tremendous success. The image of this Redstart is so very sharp and clear I can easily count even the minutest details on its plumage.
This is truly professional work and it is the good fortune of this site to be occasionally blessed with your pictures.
Best regards.

Hello Alex,
Your Sony with the 100-400Mm lens did a great job of capturing the beautiful features of this Common Redstart.
The focus is excellent and I love the over the shoulder pose which allows us to see the backside of the bird as well as it's facial features. Excellent eye contact and nice catch light.

Dear Alexei,
very charming encounter with that Redstart turning its head to look back over the shoulder in eye contact with the viewer! Excellent dynamic and minimalized off-centre composition of clear shapes and delightfully gentle hues of contrasting pastel colours. A great pleasure to see and enjoy.
Interesting notes on how to get closer to birds.
With thanks, and all my best wishes to you,
