This is my first posting of this common Starling . I had seen them in the summer down by the sea. So i went back today after the rain when we had a couple of hours sunshine . It was very cold and windy but the Starlings were there amongst the lobster pots . This picture shows one in its winter feathers. This was taken hand held.

Starling ( Sturnus vulgaris ) Length 22cm.

This is a familiar urban Bird in Britain and Ireland. And it is also common in rural areas.

Outside breeding season they form large flocks which roost in trees or on buildings.

There numbers are boosted in winter by the influx of continental Birds.

The Adults dark plumage is iridescent in summer and in the winter it acquires numerous white spots.

The Bill is yellow in the summer but dark in the winter.

The Juvenille is buffish brown.

Their varied song inclued clicks and whistles also imitates other Birds and man-made sounds such as car alarms.

Hi Nick.
Amazing in every aspect picture of the common bird. However, only this year I managed to take few good enough shots of the species. Yours is simply great. Terrific details and sharpness. Impressive magnification and wonderful scene at whole. My compliments and best wishes.

Hi Nick,
Excellent capture of this Starling with shining beautiful plumage. Though these are around I have never seen a picture with such beautiful sharp details where you can clearly see the arrow (or V) shaped dots. Well composed with good lighting.

Superb sharpness, light and rich colours of the plumage. In my cold country I will see only in end of March or on start April.

Hello Nicholas
I actually do not have to say more than simply Splendid. I repeat splendid with a capital S. I saw this bird for the first time when Mario (EOSF1) posted it the other day, and it remains a beauty. The colours and patterns captured on the plumage are superb. The details are electrifying and a real feast to the eye. The blink in the eye is catching. Overall this is a winning photograph. It deserves each and every smiley awarded. Thanks for sharing this striking image.

They are so beautiful with their winter plumage (and their yellow winter bill), and the light irises the colours, great! I love those birds, they remind me of teenagers in gang making mischiefs. And what about their songs, when there are many of them, what a sound! Extraordinary and your picture contains all of this. Thanks Nick!

Hi Nick

I personally think that this winter plumage is much more beautiful than their summer one :)
A great close-up showing this starling with impeccable details! I love those little white "V"s on the end of their feathers...so nicely visible here!
The light you've got here is equally amazing and makes that gorgeous luster of their feathers stand out superbly.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Nick,

A beautiful capture of this Starling, a bird I have always thought of as one of the prettiest. You captured the irridescence of his plummage very well. Colors are wonderful - I love the sparkle in his eye and the beak. Amazing details of his plummage and wings. Beautiful pose, background and composition.

Hello Nick,

This is a great shot!
I always find starlings difficult to capture well as the eye is often hid. However, you have got great eye contact! The plummage details are super with the iridescence of the feathers really shining.
A good dof.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Nick,
Excellent and lovely capture of this cute starling with great details, excellent focus, nice DOF/POV and composition.
TFS and have a nice new week!

Hello my friend Nick,
How are you!
Many thanks for this wonderful image of the European Starling with good closeness!
I loved the pattern and colour especailly on this bird!

take care and regards

A WONDERFUL look at this bird which Mario of Quebec posts often. He is my main pointman on this species..and I love it...but you...you show how one eye can see in a different perspective....It almost becomes a different bird , yet the same...how intriguing..I am impressed. It is a bit out of your norm, not for worse but for better Sir Nick!

wonderful capture for lovely Starling, congratulations on your first shot for this species. great result, Nicholas. TFS, well done

hello Nicholas,
These birds are really fascinating for a photographer with the metallic reflections on the plumage. Here it has some kind of transition-plumage, almost only white spots, but just a little rest of green metallic shine. Excellent and fine sharpness.
Best regards

Hello Nick,
Great shot of a Starling in winter plumage with the whole bird tak sharp, except the beak that he must have moved. The POV, lighting and composition are all superb to make this a first class image.
TFS this beauty,

Hello Nicholas,

Excellent presentation of this starling. Excellent sharpness and wonderful colours. Light is amazing, I thought you had used the flash. The first time I remark that the legs of this bird are red.

Hi Nick,

Great amount of details and very sharp image. I went through almost all your birds photo collection and I am amazed how well they are focused, which is very difficult to do with with birds - always moving.

Hi Nicholas,
Excellent POV and pose, it's well composed.
Very good BG, details, and exposure..
The Starling looks magnificent with that green iridescence running across its side. Very photogenic model :)
