Hello,

This was taken in the grounds of Stourhead House, a huge 18th Century stately home sat in hundreds of acres of woodland and rolling hills in the Dorset countryside. Many very old trees have survived here over the years, despite storms and the need for timber in constructing warships for Britains once vast Royal Navy.
This particular specimen, with the low winters sun shinning on it, struck me as quite a grand sight and even the 10-20mm couldn't fit it all in :o)

We're half way through Novemeber now, and the last of the leaves are clinging to the branches. A few more days of windy weather and the spectacle will be gone for another year.

Handheld, shot in RAW, adjusted curves, converted to JPEG, resized and sharpened for TN.

Thanks for looking..

Superb sharpness for such a low shutter-speed while being hand-held.
The lighting is wonderful! I love the way it's lighting up just one side of the tree.
Vivid colours especially in the sky.
A striking reminder that winter is closing in!
Great work Paul.
Cheers,
Joe

You have made it into a beautiful painting...the angles are perfect and sky so true. The shadows on the bark add an intricate touch to eh already patterned bark. Then you have the perfect ground cover, perhaps not perfect for a grounds keeper.. but good for the image.
Bob

Hi Paul, I love this close composition on the outward branches as they fill the frame. The blue sky behind the Autumn tones is very pleasing. Excellent work..

Hello Paul,
What a beautiful palette of colors in this beautiful composition. Great job Paul, Cheers.

The polarizer sure added some richness and saturation to the colors in your image. You have really captured the essence of fall. Isn't it amazing how close you can get to a tree with that lens? It always surprised me.

Hi Paul,
It looks like you had some wonderful autumn weather to work with. I haven't seen a blue sky for days and by now all the magnificent of autumn has gone. Love the color contrast in the photo and how you have chosen a low POV to make the tree look massive. I do think you over sharpened the photo a bit.
TFS,
Niek

Hello Paul,
This is a beautiful tree, a tree with a personality!
The subject is well framed, and the autumnal atmosphere is present all over the frame...
Good colour palette and fine details, the blue sky makes a fine background!
Greetings,

Hi Paul

I apparently missed this one from you...better late than never, eh? :)
It's indeed a great picture of this massive oak and being such an old and big one, i'm not surprised it didn't fit in a frame, not even with your UWA lens. It's a very beautiful tree...but still looks about half the size of the one i have in my garden :p (i don't usually brag...but i couldn't resist :))) The one i have in my backyard was planted in 1889).
Anyway, i really like how the picture blends with your note here - especially with the part about the last leaves. The scenery is beautiful here, but it's one of those cases in which the note completes the picture making it stunning. Hard to find that these days.
The late autumn sun really makes the best of the colors here i really like how the tones of the woods looks against that great sky. Very good exposure and composition here as well.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Paul!

It's a beautiful oak situated in a lovely autumnal scenery. The colors therefore are intense and bright, although a lot of them are already on the ground.

I like the low point of view that underlines the impression that dozens of fingers are trying to catch the clouds... or the wires of the electric line, eh?

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Paul,
Lovely shot mate - and not a coast in sight!! Stourhead is a great spot, went there last year, and you've captured the essence of autumn beautifully here - the colours are incredible, the vivid blue sky really adds the spark needed to set this scene off. Great composition too, that lens is wonderful!
And all hail the 1/10th handholder god! :-)
Cheers, Doug

Hello Paul,
I seem to have missed out on your latest shots.
I love the feel of late autumn in this one, the rich brown colours on the ground complemented by the almost bare trees and their trunks showing their best in the yellow light. Lovely striking blue sky as a contrast and superb tree shape forming the major part of the composition.
I know Stourhead well: we lived in N. Dorset for while.
Thanks for sharing,
Have a good weekend,
Ivan
