This is my 100th post to TN.

An adult Gannet at RSPB Bempton Cliffs nature reserve. Handheld shot with Canon 1D MKIII with 400mm DO and 1.4x Extender.

From Birdguides:

Gannet (Morus bassanus)

In: Northern Gannet Ca: Mascarell Da: Sule De: Basstölpel Es: Alcatraz atlántico Fi: suula Fr: Fou de Bassan It: Sula Nl: Jan van Gent No: Havsule Pt: Ganso-patola Sv: Havssula US: Northern Gannet Ru: Северная олуша

Identification
Gannets have a variety of plumages, from the dark speckled brown juveniles to the immaculate, almost white, adults with various brown and white plumages in between. At all ages though Gannets can be told by their unique shape with long bodies, pointed at both ends, and impressively long, pointed wings enabling them to fly quickly, but effortlessly, with long glides.

Habitat
Breeds on rocky islands and cliffs. Winters in coastal and off-shore waters.

Behaviour
Catch fish by spectacular plunge-diving. Flying birds close their wings making their whole body streamlined like an arrow which dives head-first into the water. Moments later the bird returns to the surface, often with a large fish struggling in its mouth.

Migration
Many adults are present in northern waters throughout the winter, but most move south after breeding to winter between the Bay of Biscay and the coast of western Africa.

Hello Pekka, Congratulations on your 100th Post and wish many more to come. This is a very good shot and looking at the eye contact of the bird, even it is proud to have your 100th Post. Well done and TFS Ganesh

Congratulations on #100! This is a wonderfully sharp and well exposed image Pekka. Gannets are among my most favorite birds. I love the markings and the sleekness of them. You captured all the detail. I keep wanting to straighten the image up but I suspect he was actually standing at an angle. It makes me nervous but I guess birds are better equipped than the rest of us for dealing with cliffs and falls!!!!!!! : )

TFS and I'm sure we are all looking forward to the next 100!

Evelynn : )

Hi Pekka

I am back - sorry for the absence. Great shot and excellent 100th posting. Great pose and detail - eye and feet especially.

James

Congratulation for century and all the beautiful pictures.

Hello Pekka,
I really like the composition and color on this shot. The background grass forms an excellent backdrop to show the gannet to full advantage. The contrast would be much less dramatic against the rock surface.
Regards,
Greg
