Alan, I understand you very well! These Dragons are ultrahard to shot! In Poland we've got proverb - 'czujny jak wazka' which means 'vigilant as dragonfly'. One of last days I tried to capture it. I looked like madman running in circles around a pond ;-)
Your picture isn't good - it is VERY GOOD! Superb catch and 1GB card was good choice ;-) Thanks Alan, now I know it IS possible and I'll trying harder ;-)

I quote you Alan: "OK.. I know this isn't the best of dragonfly shots." Yes, there are better ones (just kidding). Seriously, this is very difficult to get right, and needs lots of patience to find a lazy critter. VERY well done, Alan. I wish I would be able to show such a sharp image before winter :-).
Congratulations

Yeah, well, I tend to think that most large dragonflies suffer from some degree of ADHD, at least they rarely sit still ;-))
I agree with your ID. The action is nicely frozen with almost no wing movement visible - it just goes to show how fast those wings move.. Good sharpness and light.

Don't be so hard on yourself, not too many have given it a go.
Excellent shot, I like what you did, takes alot of neds to go for a flight of the dragon.
Well done on the composition.
Excellent work.

Hello Alan,
I am glad there are people shooting 1 GB cards full on only 1 subject! :) Man, I've must have shot 200 pics for just one decent shot. ;) And my subjects were sitting still. I think this is a very succesful photo and I like the POV, composition and details. Colors are nice too. I would be extremely glad with a picture like this. Well done & TFS!
Regards,
Pieter

It's no doubt much better than my best photo of flying d'fly ;-)
I know perfectly how hard it is to take such shot so I think this one is great.
As for the Wimbledon. My mother is watching this all the time, but I really prefer to chase d'flies or do anything else ;-)
I like the photo very much.
VERY WELL DONE!

Just atonished. Getting this side view with no flash and 1/4000 is just skilful. Congrats.
As you say maybe is not the best shot of this insect in flight, but I think it is the only perfect side view and one of the best motion capture on the wings. Very well done.

Another great dragonfly shot Alan, 1/4000 sec has really freezed the action. I can't seem to find any Dragonflies where I am, maybe look in the wrong places. Anyhow, great capture and well done.

Hi Alan, I reckon the ID is good. They look easy but as you have found out they are anything but! I think you did a great job of this. Emperor's are pretty tough to get, the males do settle, but not often and then not for long. If you think this is hard try and get a male Brown Hawker! I will try later this year.
Very well done.
Alan, congratulations on your effort, your patience and your talent.
An amazing capture. Excellent composition, pov and sharpness. Everything's stunning.
I checked you used ISO 800. Did you use Neat Image?
Congratulations.
I added your picture to a theme of mine.
