[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This juvenile male sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus)flew into a building at a sewage works and became trapped.

This photo was taken just before the bird was released having been caught up in a hand net.

The eye colour of sparrowhawks change with age, getting more orange or red as they age. Pale or straw coloured eyes like this bird has are only seen on young birds.

Sparrowhawks are sexually dimorphic, females are much bigger than males, which lets you tell the sex based on measurements.

Young inexperienced birds often end up stuck inside buildings as they chase smaller birds which often duck into barns and storehouses to escape. Once in the building the natural instinct of the sparrowhawk is to go up so it then often cannot find the way out. I frequently get calls to help get the birds out.

This bird was otherwise uninjured, but I guess hungry as it had been trapped for 24 hours before I got there.
