Here's a close-up of a Migrant Hawker which I took on a TN meet-up with Necip, Pekka and Vinny back in August.

I hope you like it!

Migrant Hawker - Aeshna Mixta

Length: 63mm
A small Hawker, not aggressive towards other individuals and occasionally seen in large feeding swarms. It flies late into the autumn and is likely to be the only Hawker found in November. The costa is brown and there is a "golf-tee" shaped, yellow mark on S2. The male looks quite dark with blue, paired spots along the abdomen. The pale yellow ante-humerals are indistinct and short and eyes are blue.
The female is brown with similar markings to the male but the spots are smaller and often yellow, occasionally blue. The ante-humerals are insignificant or absent and eyes are brownish.

Breeds in standing water but may be found well away from water along hedgerows or woodland edges. Frequently resting low in vegetation.

Status and Distribution
Common and increasing its range. Strongholds in southern England, but now reaching well into northern England and recently appeared in Ireland. Continental migrants may boost the population in late summer.

Similar species
Similar in appearence to Common Hawker but is smaller with a brown costa.

Hello Joe,
Wonderful photo in perfect sharpness and beautiful saturated colours. Great composition and POV.

Somehow I can just see you with large lens and macro then a telescope in front and then a microscope in front of that and on to infinity...How in the world you can get so close in with such clarity is well beyond my gear of any tim3e...Fine image Joey!

It almost look like a kaleidoscopic view! Superb Joey!

Hi Joe,
I am still considering whether I should post my 'macro' shot of this same Migrant Hawker. If you remember I took a few with 400DO + 2x extender, minimum focus distance 3.5 meters;o). The result is not bad. Obviously this is how it should be done. It is amazing how much small details can be captured when you know what you are doing and what gear to use. Excellent, excellent work as always!

Hi Joe

A great close-up of this gorgeous migrant hawker, mate!
I really like your rather original POV here but i think you were also a bit lucky here to find it so calm and cooperating :) I don't know exactly how you do it, but i usually take my first shot at f/8 and them move up to a bigger f-stop and implicitly a longer shutter speed if i get the chance :)

Anyway, the result here is excellent and the magnification level reached is terrific!
The colors are charming but those famous textures from their eyes are the ones that grab the attention. Great work in retaining those!

Bravo and TFS

Great detail here - plus very skillful work - as usual.

I hope you come back and post more shots like this. Your macros are amazing. Such astounding detail. You take the mundane and zoom in until it's magic.

Wonderful Macro. I had to add you as a favortie because for your age, you are already awesome and I can't wait to see how you improve over time. I love your work.
