[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Today's subject is a female Brambling, Fringilla montifringilla, a species that does not breed in the UK. It is closely related to the Chaffinch, and often associates with them in mixed flocks in the winter months. The female Brambling, like most finches, is less brightly coloured than the male, but is still an attractive bird with orange patches on the breast and shoulders.

I was wondering what (or if) to post today, and wandered from my home office to the kitchen to make some tea at lunchtime. As is usually the case, my camera was set up through a screen on the kitchen "stable door" on the chance that something interesting would turn up. A quick look found our first Brambling of the "winter" - in Spring! Over the winter of 2010-11, we had Bramblings in the winter regularly, and I made a complete mess of my photographic efforts. This one is a better result than my 100+ from last year and is very much "hot off the presses" - I am posting it within 20 minutes of shooting!

Taken with the 300mm f/2.8, TC-20EIII and balanced fill-flash. In post processing, there was no sharpening applied whatsoever.

Bonjour Nigel,
Agréable valorisation du sujet.
A bientôt sur TN pour de nouvelles aventures.

Hello Nigel,
Hope you are well. Fine note my dear friend, helps a lot in getting a glimpse of the friends activities in their various localities all around the world.I also keep my little camera handy.
The photo of this brambling despite the flash is very sharply focused and shows your professionalism in handling the subject.Beak and eye in particular are reflecting the flash light as does a part of the breast but it is a splendid shot in the conditions you have described in your note. Thanks a lot for sharing a scene of your world in Lincolnshire. Take care....warmest regards/Abid
