This was taken in Richmond Park in London. This young male Deer does not have any Females of his own this year. But spent most of his day trying to barge in on a group of Females which had a large Male with them. By the determined look on his face i do not think it will be long before he wins the day. He is a fine looking beast.

Red Deer ( Cervus elaphus ) Shoulder Height 115-120cm.
An imposing animal and Britains largest native land mammal. The Male is larger than the Female and has well developed branching antlers. These are shed each February, reappear in the spring and become larger with each succesive season.
Their summer coat is reddish brown but appears more grey-brown in the winter.
Lives in seperate sex herds for much of the year and spends much of the daytime resting or wallowing in mud. They are most active from dusk to dawn.
Annual autumn rut accompanied by roaring, bellowing sounds from Stags.
Restricted to wild terrain in Southern scotland and the Highlands, Lake District, South west England and Ireland.

Hi Nicholas,
Beautiful golden light!
It's so good the warm light got on the deer, that produces this crisp and sharp image.
I like the way you managed to compose the frame, with this view of the deer's whole body.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,
JM

Hi Nick

Another beautiful shot of a red deer from Richmond Park. I must confess: all you people posting these splendid close-ups from this place definitely makes me want to go to this place whenever i decide to go to the UK ;)
You capture is impressive in means of sharpness and DOF especially! The details and textures on the deer are simply impeccable and the wide opened aperture made sure you benefited from an outstanding BG - particularly behind his head...that's where it really brings him out beautifully.
The warm late autumn light gives a lovely aura and mood for the picture, too.
The colors are a bit tricky...before seeing the workshop, i would have said that this is just how they should be; after seeing it i'm a little in doubt. In the WS they are definitely too cold (too much blue-ish tones), but i would say to go at about 10-20% of that in addition to yours here and you might get them perfectly. Just a thought :)
Either way, it's a wonderful shot!

Bravo and TFS
Horia

PS: did you manage to ask your guy from the photo store about those diagonal lines from the out of focus areas?

Hello Nick,
this is a wonderful capture of this majestic stag.
+++ The sharpness is excellent and the photo is full of tiny details: the flies on the deer's side, each hair, the dark pupil in its brown eyes etc.
Perfectly composed as usual with a superb POV and pose.
Nicely blurred BG and a decent DOF.
Excellent notes... you describe this "outcast" deer perfectly.
--- Nothing :D
Fine work mate!
Well done,
Joe

Very interesting read. Good picture of course. Another species I have never heard of with exception of images on TN. They have a sleek and muscular body. The antlers are much more prominent and masculine than our white and mule deer. If it were not for the notes stating otherwise I would have suspected it was in it's own environs. Very nice lesson.

Hi Nick, superb deer in great pose with splendid warm colors and excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Kind regards,

Hello Nicholas, This picture is EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD! Being a Sony A100 user, was all the more happy to see such good output. Great work here.

Warm regards, Kiran

Hi Nicholas,
I like your very beautiful picture. The shot is of perfect sahrpness and the pose of the animal is great. The rut period is very fascinating, I have been able to observe it in a park in France some time ago. As to the tonebalance, I prefer your version to the WS one, although Laurent has a point in suggesting less warm tones ... so I guess I rejoin Horia here ;-)
Great work, Mike

bonjour nick
je repasserais demain pour les points mais je tenais a presenter un WS pour ce beau male qui meritait ces quelques retouches je pense.
