Hi guys, took this on the weekend, again in Richmond Park. Four of us were out for a stroll and I grabbed my camera just before we left, glad I did because within 20 metres of entering the park this female kestrel was just perched on a fence right beside me!
No-one else saw it and it didn't seem to care I was so close. Got a few shots of it before it had had enough of posing. Sun was low giving it a nice warm appearance on her feathers. Really beautiful bird up close.

Falco tinnunculus
Common kestrel

A familiar sight with its pointed wings and long tail, hovering beside a roadside verge. Kestrels have been recently declining as a result of habitat degradation due to continuing intensive management of farmland and so it is included on the Amber List. They have adapted readily to man-made environments and can survive right in the centre of cities. (from RSPB)

Thanks for looking.

Hi Simon

I think we are all pleased you grabbed your camera too! Stunning shot. You have isolated the Kestrel nicely from the BG. Clear and tack sharp too. Congrats! Love the catchlight.
