An adult Bar-tailed Godwit in winter plumage at Titchwell nature reserve sea shore. Rainy day and the light was quite low.

Identification
In summer, male Bar-tailed Godwits go completely brick-red underneath from bill to tail. They also differ from Black-tailed Godwits in their shorter legs and the lack of a wing pattern. In flight they resemble small Curlews with generally brown upper-parts, except for the triangular white rump and pale barred upper-tail. However, they have slightly up-turned rather than obviously down-turned bills. Unlike Black-tailed Godwits, their upperparts are heavily patterned even in winter plumage and they are unlikely to look prominently red or orange on the head and neck.

Habitat
Breeds on open tundra. Winters on muddy estuaries and sandy shores.

Migration
Most of the western Palearctic breeding population winters in western Europe. In spring many birds stop-off at the Waddensee, before continuing to their breeding grounds during late May.

this is very beautiful wader bird. I have seen only L. limosa from this genus. you are lucky to see and capturing with a nice shot. POV, focus, composition and lighting very nice. Thanks for sharing, best wishes

Hello Pekka,
An excellent capture of a Bar-tailed Godwit taken from a great lateral POV that shows its features, including the slightly upturned bill with fine sharpness and lighting.
When they come to Sweden in may they have already gained their red breeding plumage.

Hi Pekka. You have taken a good close up of the Godwit which your large lens has taken with fine detai land sharp focusing. You have dane well with the poor light you must of had to work with. wel ldone TFS.

Hello Pekka,

Despite the bad lighting condition you have shown well the bird. Plumage pattern and colors can be well seen. Even if the image is slightly soft very good details of the bird can be seen.

Pekka,

You did a great job of getting this unique bird in not ideal conditions. You have shown the bird very well even thought the picture is not as crisp as I am sure you would have liked. It would have bee great to have better light, but as nature photographers we can't always wait for the perfect light to capture a subject we think is important.

From this fine shot, it is easy to see how well adapted this bird is to its method of hunting for food.
Although the light was poor, there was enough to create an interesting reflection on the water which gives a very good impression of movement.
Good off-centre composition.
