This is a Rainbow Lorikeet that I photographed at the same place as the Barn Owl I posted yesterday.
I hope you like it :D

The Rainbow Lorikeet, Trichoglossus haematodus is a species of Australasian parrot found in Australia, eastern Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. In Australia, it is common along the eastern seaboard, from Queensland to South Australia and northwest Tasmania. Its habitat is rainforest, coastal bush and woodland areas.

Rainbow Lorikeets have been introduced to Perth, Western Australia, Auckland, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

Rainbow Lorikeets grow to 25-30 cm (9.8-11.8 in) in size, with a wingspan of about 17 cm (6.7 in) and vary significantly in colouration between the numerous subspecies. Their eponymous markings of the best known subspecies moluccanus are particularly striking: a dark blue or violet-blue head and stomach, a bright green back, tail and vent, and an orange breast and beak. Several have darker scalloped markings across the orange breast and the Weber's lorikeet is predominantly green.

Rainbow Lorikeets feed mainly on pollen and nectar, and possess a tongue adapted especially for their particular diet. The end of the tongue is equipped with a papillate appendage adapted to collecting nectar from flowers. They are also frequent visitors at bird feeders that supply lorikeet-friendly treats, such as store-bought nectar, sunflower seeds, and fruits such as apples, grapes and pears.

In Australia, breeding usually occurs during spring (September to December), and mated pairs typically nest in eucalypt tree hollows.

Thanks for viewing :)

Hi Joe

Great Close-up. Excellent definition on the feathers and eye. Great exposure and colour.

Dear Joe
Wonderful portrait of this Rainbow Lorikeet,
Graet use of flash, exposure and composition,
Superb shot,Welldone.

Hi Joe
They do have amazing colours in their feathers which the flash has really bought out on this portrait. Looks as though he has lost his feathers around his neck. Good close-up and colour with feather detail.

Stunning colour in this shot Joe.
The detail in the feathers is very sharp but the beak gets a bit soft.
Do you have one of those AFs with a spot that you can move around the screen ?
I would have nmoved it to the bottom right here and concentrated the AF on the beak.
The rest would still have come out reasonably sharp too I think.
Where to direct the focus is a difficult choice to make sometimes, but generally,if you focus on the eye or beak you'll get a pretty good all over focus ... and the eye is very sharp here.
(The only awkward thing is the colour of the beak ... AF doesn't like those shades of red so much)
Really nice shot though.
Very well done.

Nice on Joe, super detail and wonderful colour. I hate it when they rip out their own feathers like that..

Hi Joe

Wow...now those are some amazing colors! Truely vivid and almost like jumping out of the monitor :)
This is a splendid portait of this beautiful rainbow lorikeet. I had the chance of seeing these one is real life when i visited the Portland zoo (i actually had one on my shoulder :)) so i know how amazing they look; you managed to capture that well here.
The flash brought out the best of the colors but it also gave you an impeccable BG - dark, but not black, with those interesting impression on hte right there. I think it really adds to the overall wonderful composition.
Great job!

Bravo and TFS

bonjour joe
oh!!ça c'est de la couleur!!!
beaucoup de details dans les plumes, mais dis moi si je me trompe,il n'a pas de plumes ailleurs que sur la tête?

These are amazingly vivid colours caught by your good self here. Top focus on feathers and nice positioning.
I cant help noticing that it seems to be lacking its neck feathers, almost giving the " oven ready " look. Is this so? It is a phenomonon that I have seen a few times in tropical birds that are kept in captivity.
Keep up the good work.

Hi Joe,
Outstanding portrait shot with amazing colours and sharp details. Great use of flash lighting and against the darkish BG the Lorikeet stands out well. I like the intense look on its eyes. Superb exposure, DOF and POV. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

Magnifique, superbes détails et splendides couleurs.

G day Joe
I know you have taken this for the colour in her feathers, which is beautiful and sharp (ashame about the softness in the beak). But would it be more of an interesting shot having the whole bird in frame? You could of emphasized on the obvious stress and boredem she could be in! This is why she has hardly any feathers. It’s a female because the males have blue coloured nostrils just above the beak
