Common Darter (Sympetrum striolatum)

A Common darter (probably female) which has emerged from its water nymph stage on the underside of a bush at the ponds edge. During this time it will be vulnerable and easy prey to predators.
When the nymph left the water it would begin to breath air, swallowing this air causes the skin to split down the back and the adult dragonfly gradually emerges leaving behind the skin (exuvia).
Blood is pumped into the wings and it will take many hours before they fully harden and the dragonfly will be ready for flight.

It’s the first time I’ve seen this up close, hopefully I will get to see one actually emerging one day.I must have been a hour or two late when I found this one.
I had to use the diffused flash as it was in the shade of the bush.It was difficult getting it right due to the soft shiny wings reflecting the light but this i think was the best of about 20 shots I got.Hope you like it.

Hi Andy!
Great moment! Reborn of darter - looks excellent. I like composition with remainings of old insect's body and fresh colour of new one. Very detailed and interesting shot.

Hello Andy,
very well captured document of that beautiful, freshly emerged darter. Very good details, beautiful soft colours. Exciting to look at. These insects are so vulnerable at that stage. Great picture!
Thank you, Peter

Hello Andy,
excellent macro, very nice capture with a superb composition
Superb detail, and excellent bright colours. Very sharp and clear.
Thanks for posting

Excellent work Andy. Interesting shot.
Very good DOF that includes not only the darter but the nymph exuvia as well. Excellent flash effect, colors and well composed. Very sharp..Very well done.

This is wonderful! An event most of us will probably never get to see except through your photograph. Excellent DOF, exposure and composition. The little white threads on the husk make it look like he was stitched into the old skin and just popped his seams. LOL!

Hello Andy, I think you still had much luck seeing this even though you miss the emerging. I have a pond behind my house and whole summer I've been trying to find emerging dragonfly. Of course I didn't see anything ;)
I think the picture is great and that's beacause of the moment captured and the quality of the photo. Details are really amazing. The light is perfect too. I'm not entirely sure on the composition but that's not that important.
Very well done on this one!
