White-letter Hairstreak

Satyrium w-album

I was pleased to find this small butterfly as they are rarely seen. They spend most of their time in the treetops feeding on honeydew.
Only occasionally do they come down to feed on flowers.
This is the first one I’ve been able to photograph. This one was resting on a mature thistle and the background is the pond.
The White-letter Hairstreak is a small butterfly with an erratic, spiralling flight typical of the hairstreaks. It is distinguished by a strongly-defined white 'W' mark across the undersides. The dark uppersides are seen only in flight as the butterflies always settle with their wings closed.
It breeds where elms occur in sheltered hedgerows, mixed scrub, and the edges of woodland rides, and also on large, isolated elms. It was previously thought to have a strong preference for large, mature elm trees, but is now found frequently on younger elm growth.

I used diffused flash and exposure compensation was set at -2
I cloned out another thistle head that was just showing in the bottom right hand corner.

Thanks for looking, have a great day.

Hello Andy,
Did you tell this little butterfly to land on a flower that matches its color? Haha...
A beautiful composition. I particularly like the POV on the head.
He looks like he is looking directly at you, though it is hard to interpret those weird insect eyes. : )
This little guy has been around the block a few times, but he has very unusual and interesting patterns and colors on his wings.
TFS. : )

Hi Andy,
Understand your excitement when you got to see this rarity down on earth so that you could immortalize him/her! And you got a very good picture against an appropriate background and with excellent details. Thank you very much for this valuable contribution and a good note,
(In Sweden, the elm disease has reduced their population, making a rare species rarer yet to get a chance to see)

Very nice work again Andy,
Perfect light and color, very well seen from the solid dark BG..Sharp detail, great POV and framing as well.
Very well done..again :)

Great shot Andy! Beautiful brown tones are everywhere in the frame! Great pov and framing on this worn but still beautiful butterfly.

Hi Andy
It's really good picture. Great colours and composition. The butterfly is not in good state but the picture is great ;-D
