Large Red Damselfly male
|[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note|
|Well I said I would try and find one of these after Paul (PDP) found his in the south of the UK, we are approximately 100 miles north of him. and about 2 weeks behind. We have a small field pond on the way home that has a small colony of them. The Large Red Damselfly (Pyrrhosoma nymphula) is reckoned to be a common and wide spread damselfly found across the whole of the UK in ponds streams and ditches, though I know of only one place locally that has a colony and that is a field pond which is close to the side of the A606 Nottingham to Melton Mowbray road, it is spring feed from the bottom and never seems to dry up even in a dry summer. it is surrounded almost completely by Hawthorn and Blackthorn/Sloe trees, and has a resident pair of moorhens.|
The Large red spends 2 years as a nymph. this is one of the earliest to emerge according to my books with it being possible to see them from the middle of April, though mid may is more likely, though I have already seen both our local blue one before seeing this one, Teneral common Blue and Blue-tailed damselfly , posted here earlier.
Captured this evening on the sheltered sunny side of the hedge that runs alongside the pond it appeared to be hunting the numerous small insects that where flying in the shelter there. Taken on one of its brief rests , I was unable to get a parrel shot of it because it was tucked into the hedge and there where branches that could not be moved with-out disturbing it.

Bien fait! J'aime le parallèlisme de la libellule avec la branche, qui est de plus de la même couleur! Bonne composition!

Beautifully coloured damselfly, nice pose.
Well done Robert, a pleasure to view! Excellent note with links, Very well done!
Hi Robert! Wonderfully clear shot of the little guy! Cannot see any "matter" at all outside of the black webbing on the wings, looks totally transparent with no substance! Astounding how their front ends can support their rear ends! Love the capture of the eyes, too. Great shot! Thanks! Linda
