I am posting this shot as I have just been watching a tragic story on Moorhen chicks on the TV Programme Sprinwatch.

Springwatch is a popular TV program here in the UK. It is shown for a few weeks in spring. The show has cameras trained on nest sites and we have been watching the births, lives and sometime deaths of the new spring birds. We have seen owl chicks eating their siblings, blackbirds fledging and a buzzard chick being raised. It is hoped that the swallows will fledge tonight. You can also watch the webcams online.

The moorhen nest is a bit sad as it was targeted by a mink (see workshop). Thankfully two chicks are still alive. This was shown today and then the camera cut away to the buzzard nest where the buzzard chick was eating a baby moorhen.

Springwatch also shows other spring action with a camera trained on a badger set and a story following some urban foxes.

This moorhen chich was sitting in the worst place for a photo with strong bright light and dark shadows.

Hi Karan

A really lovely shot - I love the strong light and colours. The POV is excellent, likewise, the focus on the head.

Hi Karen

Superb shot of the fluffy Moorhen Chick, lovely composition and a great pose and POV, nice detail on the downy feathers, the colours are lovely as is the lighting, you can't tell the the conditions were difficult as you have done such a good job. I seen the poor Chicks on Springwatch, almost as bad as the poor Owlets that were eaten by there bigger Siblings.

TFS Hilary :o)

Delicada toma con una luz excelente que crea un ambiente muy agradable. Buenos detalles del plumón del ave. Saludos Karan.

Hello Karen,
Very cute captured of this chick with sharpness, clarity and correct lighting

Hello Karan

I witnessed a mink grab a baby mallard duckling to bring home to her young. The photos are not of a quality I would post,so the series won't make it to TN.Guess I was too excited and all my stuff is handheld.Anyway this moorhen shot is a good one, with the details of the chick being sharp and well defined. Not a very attractive little thing.Well composed with very good colours.TFS

Rob

Hello Karan,
A fluffy little cutie well captured!
I like the composition and the vast waters ahead of him, the red beak is a real eye-catcher!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Karan,
I watch that show too, but missed last nights episode.
I like the dreamy effect of this photo. The soft light and the offcentered composition are wonderful. Great sharpness on the head and good clarity around the eye.
Sometimes nature can be harsh.
TFS,
Niek

P.S. the WS photo is a really cool photo as well.

Looks good ... well, as "good" as a moorhen chick can!... sitting there in the green.

Hi Karen,

i watched Springwatch too (as i do most nights at the moment!), and it was a bit sad. There was a Mink farm near where i live that was raided by animal rights activists a few years ago and they were let loose. They are still causing havoc amongst the local wildlfie.
I love the light here though, it makes the green in the water almost glow and highlights the Moorhen Chick nicely. Good detail in the fluffy down too.
Did you watch the doco on the Wye Valley after Springwatch?

Hello Karan,
What a fluffy vulnerable little one :) This is an excellent capture of it with superb details and colors. The picture in WS is great too. I hope that this little one is still well and alive. This program seems very interesting and I'm sure that I would like it. Talking about TV programs, have you seen this series realized by the BBC I think called: planet earth? We have them here in French, every Sunday night and this is the most expensive documentary never realized and the most amazing that I have seen in my life... They use top equipment to capture breathtaking sceneries of the planet with a different theme each week. The cost for each program is 1 million dollars... Thanks,
Claudine

A lovely shot Karan,

everyone is talking about Springwatch, but I don't have a T.V, so it sounds as if I'm missing out at the moment, but at least I don't get BB either. :-)
Very good composition, and an interesting effect. Just love the light play on it's face.

Hi Hester,

I don't think I would be able to watch that program - sounds heartbreaking.

This little chick is adorable. Beautiful lighting, colors, details - even a sparkle in his eye. He is so nice and fluffy.

Wow Jane you've really done it here! This shot is both a work of art aswell as a superb photo. You have made these often odd looking chicks beautiful. The light is perfect and glows, colours are wonderful and the little chick is perfectly exposed and sharp. Great light on the eye. Very well done.

Great note on the not to be missed show!

Hi Karan.
Touching story and terrific of tenderness shot. The reproduction of the water and water plant is great as well as the reflection of the chick beauty. My sympathy and best wishes.

Hi Karan,
Very well illustrated history. It seems that the moorhen chich face expresses certain sadness.
Very expressive and excellent pose of the hunter too.

I am afraid that real nature is quite harder than big brother, no matter how brainless and stupid they chose the people :)
No really, it is a very interesting program I have never heard of, and I would like to have something similar here too. It sounds very educative, and I understand it must be hard...
You captured a very lovely shot and workshop, and wrote a nice note that surprised me... I had a look at the webcam, but I will have to install RealPlayer 1st. :)
Best regards, Felipe.
