I think we all have out favorite animals. My 2 favotites have always been Red Deer and Water Voles. It is a shame to have a reed over him but he was sitting in the reeds so every shot has him tangled up in them. I liked this view of his single minded search for food.

Current status
The water vole is found throughout Britain but is confined mainly to lowland areas near water. Once common and widespread, this species has suffered a significant decline in numbers and distribution. A national survey in 1989-90 failed to find signs of voles in 67% of sites where they were previously recorded and it is estimated that this will rise to 94% by the turn of the century. A recent population estimate based on the number of latrines found suggested a total GB pre-breeding population of 1,200,000 animals.

As the lower reaches of rivers become unsuitable for habitation, the distribution of water voles becomes discontinuous and existing sites become isolated and vulnerable. There are few data available on the ecology or conservation requirements of this species as its former common status means that it has attracted little study.

The water vole is being considered for addition to parts of Schedule 9 of the WCA 1981.

Current factors causing loss or decline
* Loss and fragmentation of habitats.
* Disturbance of riparian habitats.
* Predation by mink.
* Pollution of watercourses and poisoning by rodenticides.

Another fantastic view of this shy little chap Karan, wonderfully captured and framed. I like the reed it adds to the natural surroundings.

Hi Karan

Although you mention that it's a shame to have the reed over this little guy, but I actually think it is fine since it shows this small rodent in habitat scurrying through the vegetation while it forages for food stuff. Thus, a typical activity this little guy would perform for most of the day and after all it is a great shot showing quite ample features of the vole's body. I can fully understand why this cute little animal is one of your favourites.

The composition and cropping is well done, the colours are perfectly natural, the focus ensured lovely details throughout the shot, and the exposure was well managed even showing a little catch-light in the eye.

Good work and TFS.

Voles are very tiny aren't they?? I'm not sure about a water vole. This is a nice capture of the little guy in its natural habitat. The grass helps give scale to the image. Nice sharpness and natural color.

Hi Karen,
i agree with Loot, the reed covering him is great and adds to the images feel of life in the undergrowth. Excellent details and natural looking colour, you seem to have a knack for finding these little creatures, i've tried a few times and always failed miserably.

Hi Karan,
Splendid shot of the Water Voles with sharp details and fine focus. I like the intensity on its eyes and its singleminded attention to forage for food irrespective of your presence. I think the reeds and the BG illustrates the habitat well. Excellent POV to portray it and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hola Karan,
hermosa y simpática captura,
buen momento en su hábitat natural,

Hi Karan,
I like this image of one of your favorite animals!
You caught him in action under some branches, and we can appreciate with good details his fur and head.
I think it's very appropriated the scene in his natural ambient.
Congratulations and thanks for share it.
My best regards,

Good capture, Karan! He looks very well fed. I don't mind the reed over him either. It helps to show his single-mindedness, pushing through, over and under obstacles in his search for food.

Hello Karan,
Not exactly a beautiful animal, but certainly with quite a bit of charm!
The funny expression is well captured, so is the wet fur coat...
Nice composition, good natural colours!

Hello Karan

I love the cute little faces on these water voles. An excellent shot showing it in it's natural environment.Well focused with wonderful detail. You have a keen eye to get these vole shots.TFS

Hi Karan, nice photo of lovely little animal, splendid sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Karen,
I do not think the reed is a distraction to this shot at all. It is part of his natural habitat, and crosses his body where it does not detract from showing his face. A good exposure with nice even light. The colors and detail look excellent.
