[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
On my last picture it was remarked that some people confuse these charming Water Voles with Common Rats. Ratty in the Children's book "Wind in the Willows" was actually a Water Vole. So I thought I would include a quote from that book:

Chapter II: The Open Road

The Rat was sitting on the river bank, singing a little song. He had just composed it himself, so he was very taken up with it, and would not pay proper attention to Mole or anything else. Since early morning he had been swimming in the river, in company with his friends the ducks. And when the ducks stood on their heads suddenly, as ducks will, he would dive down and tickle their necks, just under where their chins would be if ducks had chins, till they were forced to come to the surface again in a hurry, spluttering and angry and shaking their feathers at him, for it is impossible to say quite all you feel when your head is under water. At last they implored him to go away and attend to his own affairs and leave them to mind theirs. So the Rat went away, and sat on the river bank in the sun, and made up a song about them, which he called

`Ducks' Ditty.'

All along the backwater,
Through the rushes tall,
Ducks are a-dabbling,
Up tails all!

Ducks' tails, drakes' tails,
Yellow feet a-quiver,
Yellow bills all out of sight
Busy in the river!

Slushy green undergrowth
Where the roach swim--
Here we keep our larder,
Cool and full and dim.

Everyone for what he likes!
WE like to be
Heads down, tails up,
Dabbling free!

High in the blue above
Swifts whirl and call--
WE are down a-dabbling
Up tails all!
`I don't know that I think so very much of that little song, Rat,' observed the Mole cautiously. He was no poet himself and didn't care who knew it; and he had a candid nature.

`Nor don't the ducks neither,' replied the Rat cheerfully. `They say, "Why can't fellows be allowed to do what they like when they like and as they like, instead of other fellows sitting on banks and watching them all the time and making remarks and poetry and things about them? What nonsense it all is!" That's what the ducks say.'

So here is my Water Vole (Ratty) composing his little ditty whilst reclining on the river bank

Nice rendidtion of this uggle little critter, Karan. (I think I am a bit anti-vole because we had an infestation about 2 years ago.) But good job with the details and the flash fill to bring them out. The bg is good, too.

Hello Karan
I can see why people may confuse the lovely water vole with a common Rat...But lets hope that your fine picture goes a long way to correcting this...Lovely details especially on the face..Great work Karan..and a lovely note.

Hi Karan

I live quite close to the location of 'Wind in the Willows' and the dyke at the bottom of my garden connects into the same river system. I very rarely see water voles though.

Great POV and focus with nice colour.

Funny shot, I love it!

Hello Karan,
Poor little fellow!
Not only is his tribe declining but he also looks like wet and cold...
Good details have been captured, I notice the expression that is open for interpretations!
And the TV series used to be one of my favourites...

Hi Karan

Well..i must admit that even for me as a young bilogist, this looks very much alike a rat :))
Nevertheless, it's terrific that TN is expending its selection of animals with one rare species for us, so thanks for posting this interesting animal.
I really like your frontal aproach here and the good details you managed to get for his face.
The green BG complements its colors nicely and the good closeeup makes a fine composition.

Bravo and TFS

A lovely capture of this beautiful rat. Nice details and composition.
Best wishes,

Hi Karan, an other lovely cute creature with great sharpness and excellent details, very well done, have a nice week end, ciao Silvio

Hi Karan,
its about time to hit the couch and watch TV, but I wanted to critique at least one photo today. And since you helped me, I could not think of any other reason to critique this wonderful photo.
You seem to have a great relationship with Ratty, it looks as if he was comming straight toward you to say hello. Wonderful details in the head, and the flash made gave great clarity and colors. Great note!
