Another owl belonging to the bird santuary. I think this is a Spotted Eagle Owl which isn't a native bird. I assume this must have belonged to a private collection before being given to the bird sanctuary

If I am right about it being a Spotted Eagle Owl then these are the facts from the Hawk Conservatory website:

The Spotted Eagle Owl has a wide distribution throughout Sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Arabia.
Its preferred terrain for breeding ranges from desert to woodland.

This owl, lacking the size and strength of the great eagle owls does not compete effectively in the struggle for the small to medium sized mammals. It rather specialialises in large insects, but does take some small mammals and small birds, and, on occasions, reptiles, scorpions, crabs, snails, frogs and anything else it can find.

The call of the Spotted Eagle Owl consists of mellow, hooting sounds, with the second note a little lower than the first. The female occasionally uses a three-syllable call.

Unlike the Cape Eagle Owls (including the Mackinder's Eagle Owl) the pair form a genuine duet, giving the effect of one continuous call.

Faster, softer calls are made during courtship.

Many Spotted Eagle Owls die in traffic accidents and as a result of collisions with fences and overhead wires. Pesticide residue is also a problem with these birds in parts of Africa.

If they can survive the first winter and avoid an untimely death, the likelihood of living for another ten years or more are quite strong.

Hello there yooou boootiful Mr. Owl, and hello to you too Karan (yeah, I did not forget about you).

This is just amazing work with the in-your-face, tight cropped, and super close-up composition. And so it seems like you were literally in the face of this eagle owl at 78mm focal length. Talk about encroaching your subject. This bird showed immense tolerance to allow you that close or is it just because you are such a smooth operator.

The colours are splendid, the details are excellent, the BG…(oh sorry, there is not BG), and of course the exposure was spot on. I just love the detail you’ve captured in that eye, complete with the little catch-light as well.

Very good work and TFS.

Hi Karan,
Superb close up shot. I like the sharp eyes of this owl. Nicely cropped, to intensify eye-contact with viewers. Superbly done.

Darn, I borrowed a 400mm lens to get some close up shots, but I just realized that it can't beat this close up. How close can you get!?!
