Just a simple picture today of a cygnet. This youngster is getting his adult feathers. The underside of the wings are already pure white. He was also quite aggressive trying to nip people walking past his pond.

The strange colours are due to the fact it was a rainy day but with low light beneath the clouds.

I believe this is a mute swan

Life Cycle
Mute Swans do not normally start to breed until they are at least 3 years old. Between March and May a huge nest is constructed, in which the pen lays a clutch of normally between 3 and 7 eggs (although as many as 13 have been recorded). The eggs are laid at 2 day intervals, with incubation starting with the last egg and taking 35 days. During the breeding season the male becomes very territorial and aggressive to any intruders. This behaviour has been known to extend to swans fighting to the death. They often threaten humans who venture too close to their nests while issuing a warning call

The cygnets when hatched are grey and downy, but this down is soon replaced by brown feathers, which gradually turn white during the next 12 months. The parent birds strongly protect their offspring for the first few months but will drive them away by the following breeding season

Mute Swans have been known to live for over 25 years, but most only survive to 5 or 6 years old. Many cygnets die in their first 12 months, often due to flying accidents

Hi Karan

Your 'simple picture' turned out to be quite something. This is an excellent shot of a juvenile mute swan. I especially like the facial details you managed to capture, complete with a little catch-light in the eye. It looks like you enjoyed the lovely soft light of a late afternoon sun which made the colours come alive. I am just not sure that your camera clock is set correctly as it reports the time of capture at 23:05. Talk about midnight sun?

Anyway, the composition is fine, great colours (as mentioned), and nice sharp details, Although the BG is not completely OOF, it is not disturbing and actually lends to enhance the bird, and the exposure was spot on.

Very well done and TFS.

Hi Karan

Superb portrait shot, excellent composition and I love the pose, as its clear he/she has one eye on you, nice details with the water beads on the cygnets head, I also like the afternoon lighting and the autumn tones reflected on the water.

Hi Karan,
Very well composed.
Great details and sharpness.
Nice POV.
Well done.

Hi Karan.
The high saturated colours, and crisp clear details have turned this young swan into a very photogenic subject.
Besides this factors I think that your POV, with the head contour contrasting with the darker part of the BG is very effective. I did not spect all this from the thumb...
Best regards, and TFS.

Hola Karan,

Hi Karan

This is simply superb!!!
The POV and DOF are GREAT and very well chosen. Due to these, the swan is in a perfect warm beam of light and the BG (very beautifully blurred) goes very well with the subject, being especially dark exactly where it should be - at the head's level.
Also the focus is spot-on, the details are fantasticly sharp and the colors are lovely.
Great work!

Bravo and TFS

Hi Karen,

I really like the theme of a petulant adolescent, i've seen these youngsters acting just as belligerantly as you described! I like the composition, the details (beads of water are great) and his markings are well shown too. I also like the dark patch behind his head which only serves to compliment the light falling on his face.

bonjour karan
un bien joli portrait,j'aime la netteté,les couleurs et le cadrage.
bien fait bravo.

Hi Karan,
Nice DoF, sharp on swan and nice blurry BG.
Yes, I can see anger in his/her eye. Very expressive eye.
Nicely composed potrait.
Great shot.

Hi Karan,
Simple but beautiful. The way the youngester stands out from the BG is just amazing. Excellent lighting and sharpness, and the colors look, to my eye, just spot on. The light really helped you to create such a beautiful photo.

P.S. funny to read about the time.
