Taken at a Butterfly Farm in Swindon. Although there were many Glasswings about they would not stay still very long and they liked to be in the undergrowth. Although this is not a perfect shot i was quite pleased to get it with my small compact camera hand held.

Glasswing ( Greta oto )
Greta oto is a brush-footed butterfly, and is a member of the clearwing familt, its wings are transparent. Its most common English name is Glasswing, and its Spanish name is espejitos, which means "little mirrors." The tissue between the veins of its wings looks like glass. It is one of the more abundant clearwing species in its home range, which extends throughout Central America into Mexico. The opaque borders of its wings are dark brown sometimes tinted with red or orange, and its body is dark in color. Its wingspan is between 5.5 and 6 cm.

Adults inhabit the rainforest understory and feed on the nectar of a variety of tropical flowers. They prefer to lay their eggs on plants of the tropical nightshade genus Cestrum. The silvery-grey caterpillars feed on these toxic plants and store the alkaloids in their tissues, making them distasteful to predators such as birds. They retain their toxicity in adulthood. The same alkaloids that make them poisonous also are converted into pheromones by the males, which use them to attract females.

Hello Nick,
I've never seen this butterfly for real even though I've travelled and been to several butterfly farms! It's such a beauty! Your capture is brilliant, very sharp and I like its pose on the leaf and against the plain background. A fine composition too.
TFS and regards, Ulla

Très belle prise, le sujet ayant une apparence très filigrame donne beaucoup de finesse a cette prise.

Hi Nick
Congratulations, this is simply a beautiful picture. I wouldn't be able to do it. I'm suprised by the sharpness and especially by the depth at f2.8. And, of course, the colors are fabulous.

Well seen, well done!

Kind regards

Hi Nicholas,

I do wonder why we spend so much money on expensive equipment when wonderfful image such as these can be taken on an a compact camera. Of coures, it isn't so much about camera, rater the photographer. You still need to emply the same technicues of watching the subject matter and taking your shot at the right moment, with the right level of detail, good depth of field, the right background, good colour and light, etc, etc. I really like the picture; it's got everything I just mentioned.

Kind regards,

Hola Nicolas. Exelente Macro. Pareciera ser una pintura. Muy bella la Mariposa. Luis52.

Hi Nicholas,
Vey interesting object and very interesting picture. It is really amazing how such species could evolve... with such transparent wings... :)
It is also interesting that the English name of this species is so... correct! I did not know it before.
Thanks for showing this incredible creature and best regards from Lodz,

Hi Nick,
A beautiful clearwing butterfly. Nice composition but the focus is a bit soft because of low light. But it doesn't matters because of very nice closeup, composition and POV. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Nicholas,
Just marking this shot and will come back later with a proper critique. Sorry my friend, tied up with an important assignment.

Hi Nicholas,
nice capture, indeed - monumental in its frame filling composition, and at the same time showing all the fragility of this glasswing very well. A perfect approach, and a surprisingly sharp and stable result for f/2.8 and 1/40. Nice to see the motion blur of the busy proboscis, adding to the liveliness of the capture.
Small compact cameras can be very useful instruments in the hands of skilled photographers.
Thank you! With best regards,

hello :)
very well composed, BG suits perfectly
beautiful shot !

Great shot! Though the region near the head is little bit lacking in sharpness, but the wings are sharply focussed, and they look beautiful. Good work
