Great black-backed gull - Larus marinus

A very large, thick-set black-backed gull, with a powerful beak. Adults are blacker than the smaller lesser black-backed gull. It has a heavy flight and can look quite hunched when perched. It will fight off other gulls and chase them to snatch food.

Where does it live?
Coastal islands, cliffs, saltmarshes, and freshwater lakes and moorland near coasts. It will breed near man, occasionally using buildings.

Found around the coasts in the breeding season. At other times of year it can be found wherever gulls congregate - at reservoir roosts, rubbish tips inland, and bays and harbours.

What does it eat?
Omnivorous - shellfish, birds and carrion.

Eggs: 2-3
Incubation: 27-28 days
Fledging: 7-8 weeks
Maximum lifespan: 23 years
Length: 64-78cm
Wingspan: 150-165cm
Weight: 1-2kg
UK breeding: 20,000 pairs
UK wintering: 40,000 birds

Gary, this is a great photo. Great colours, sharpness excellent, a very nice composite. TFS

Excellent portrait of the G.B.Gull. Always wondered what they were like up close.
The very few seen here are skiddish, hard to get close to one.
Beautiful, excellent control of the whites.

Mike
