The Silky Starling, also known as the Red-villed Starling - Sturnus Sericeus comes from China, South East Asia and the Hong Kong region. They can mainly be found in scrub and cultivated ground, especially fields. In the wild they are often found feeding on the ground near cattle. This is because as the cattle move forward they disturb many bugs and insects, which the Starlings seize with ease. Their call has been described as loud and raucous, but they still have a pleasent whistle. Indeed, in their native countries they have been kept as a very popular cage bird and can be taught to talk and imitate calls of birds and animals.

At approximately 9 1/2" in length the sexes are not easy to tell apart. The cock bird's plumage is grey with black flight feathers; the head and neck are white in colour. As their common name suggest their bill is largely red tipped with black. The female is similar in colour to the male but somewhat duller. The immature birds when they leave the nest have a duller coloured beak.

Hi Clint

Wow what a stunning shot, wonderfully presented composition with a fine pose which reminds me of a piece of fine china, very nice feather detail and I just love the blue background you have used that perfectly compliments the Starlings Colours.

Hi Clint,
This is a stunner of a shot. Lovely moody lighting and wonderful timing. Love the way the cool tones of the BG match the birds feathers.

Hi Clint,

Super nice clean image, the details are magnificant and the colors are beautiful in this wonderful capture. :)

This is gorgeous Clint. I am curious as to technique. Did you use a flash? How did you manage the background that tones so well with the starling? The lustrous sheen on the feathers is stunning.

Evelynn : )

Sharpness is fantastic and the plumage details are superb. love the background, it compliments the bird so much.

A beautiful shot of this silky starling, Clint.
A bird rarely seen here on TN, and I believe a new species for me, so thanks for the introduction.
The pose is quite fetching and the colors are just stunning.
The BG compliments the bird's plumage beautifully.
I also like that skyward look.
