A strange-looking insect, the male of which has a scorpion-like, upturned abdomen. Flight weak and at rest holds wings flat. Head has beak-like downward projection used in feeding; scavenges dead animals, including contents of spiders' webs, and ripe fruit. Seen May-July in hedgerows and among brambles.

Hi Joe,
What a weird looking fly, scary and dangerous it seems. Very neat and sharp details and nice focus. I like your POV to portray it and the BG illustrates the habitat well. Very nicely composed and presented. Kudos.
TFS.

Yeah ... this is one strange beastie.
I had no idea there was anything like that in England.
A great capture Joey.
Well done.

Hello Joe.
They look dangerous but don't harm any people. This a male and you captured it quit well. Pretty POV and you can see all the details well. Perhaps a little noise in the background.
Well done.

Hi joe,

What a catch , never had seen this before its amazing to see such strange looking fly, A very well shot pic , with perfect BG and sharpness. Love the POV

Tfs and happy weekend

Hi Joe,
a nice picture of the scorpion fly.
Good POV, nice colours and sharp where is counts but
the DOF is a bit shallow, it had been nice to see the whole
insect in focus and it's pity you cut one of the antenna.
Well done.

Hello Joe,
Brilliant macro of this Scorpion Fly. It really shows details very clearly and the colours are true. It looks like a real monster here! The only snag is the noisy background but there I have the same problem!
Many thanks, Ulla

Hi Joe.
Oh my gosh, there is some really ugly insects around, the detail you have captured here sort of gives me the shivers. What a mouth on it, let along that tail.
The compositon, DOF and colour, all spot on. Great image

salut Joey,
un insect que je n'ai pas encore vu, ni pris en photo. Il a vraiment une allure effrayante, mais la réalisation avec le BG vert l'adoucis un peu. Il reste un peu de bruit qui nécessite une petite correction.

There is also nothing like this stateside. It is most unique and worthy of praise in your observation. How unusual.

Now this is one scary looking little feller! WOW! I never would have dreamed up something like that! :)

A very curious insect, Joe, seen on TN for the first time, I suppose.
I am much intrigued by its horse-like face. The hook at the tail end is certainly like that of a scorpion, though I wonder whether it is a mimic or real with a deadly sting.
Very valuable contribution indeed.
TFS.

Hi Joe,
What a strange looking insect. Reminds me of aliens.:)Nice picture with details and colours.Very good POV too. Does it sting?
TFS,
Smitha.

Hello Joe,

Great picture of this Mecoptera.
Great color, position, DOF, sharpness and background.

Dear Joey,
I think that for this interesting, well portrayed, quite elusive creature a flash would have helped to increase DOF. But it still looks nice, the light is almost shining through parts of the body. Well done!
Best regard,
Ditrich
