[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Having just gone out to the front of our house to say goodbye to my son and family, when my grandson saw this Dragonfly on the car aerial. I went back into the house quick and grabbed my compact camera to try to catch it. Did not have time to set the camera up as i have just brought it and was not sure what settings to use. I feel pleased with the results for my first pictures with this camera. The Dragonfly seems to have a smile on his face that or he was laughing at my camera. I believe it to be a Common Darter.

Common Darter ( Sympetrum striolatum ) Length 36mm.
The most common Dragonfly in England and Wales also occurs in Ireland but absent in Scotland. Mature male has blood red abdomen but in immature males and females this is orange-brown. Nymph found amoung pond weeds and debris. Frequently rests on ground but also uses perches. Flies June to late autumn often the last flying of Dragonflies.

Hi Nick,

Congratulations on the new camera - great first shot! Does look like he is smiling at you. You have a way with dragonflies. I love the position showing off his face so well. And the wings are spectacular against the blue sky.

Jane

mm.. i recognise that aerial somewhere I think ? Good to see that your new camera is serving you well. Top shot of this cheeky little chappy.

Jai

Hello Nick,

It is a fine shot! I love the filigree effect of the wings against the sky! And those long legs clinging to the post!

Sometimes the 'unprepared for' photographs are the best!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

James

Hi Nick,
This one more time does tell us to never go out without your camera :)
You were verry lucky the Darter did stay that long waiting for you to have a view shots :)
You indeed can be very pleased with the result because this is a great macro image.
Love the frontal view and the most wonderful color contrast between the light blue sky and the yellow and brown colors of the dragonfly.
Details and patterns in the wings are lovely and lighting and sharpness excellent.
Great work. My compliments.
Thanks for sharing and the great note.
Best wishes,
Harry

Dang guy you have a good sense of humor! Very good then. What ever happened to the "good old dry wit" my mum used to talk about? You have hit the nail on the head with this shot! AND Title...

Bob

Hi Nicholas,
Cool POV..It definitely shows a big smiley there :)
Well exposed with nice colors, detail, DOF, and BG. The wings look great against the blue sky, with the patterns well defined.
Well done!
Howard

Well done. These guys usually are very serious. It's a feat by itself to make them smile! :)
Great capture with crisp detail! Kudos!
Cheers, Klaus

Yes, it is smiling...and now wonder...it looks like a beautiful day to be sunning, while the paparazzi chases you down.

Great shot!

Hello Nick,
Great capture of a Common Chaser taken from an unusual POV on your car aerial. Fine DOF , sharpness and composition.
Nice to have a granson as an extra pair of eyes: my only grandchild is a little girl of only 13 months so she's not old enough yet.
TFS and have a nice weekend,
Ivan

Hi Nicholas,
different but nice POV. I like especially wings' details. nice shot. BG and other colors very good. TFS
have a nice weekend.
Ahmet

The thumbnail does not say MUCH about this pic actually. Good details irrespective of the POV. I presume you were restricted by space available - hence the POV. THEN, we see a detailed focus on WHAT CAN be FOCUSSED from that angle! That is good work.

Yes.

Warm regards, Kiran.

Bonjour Nicholas

Conjunto original, elegante y atractivo.
Saludos Nicholas.

I have seen lots of wonderful captures with Olympus compacts and this is very promising, if you took this one in this conditions, I guess what you will show when using the cam properly :)
Very nice POV of this funny situation, and looks to be funny for the subject too!
Have a nice We, Felipe.
