[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Hello,

This was taken at Syon Butterfly House in London. This is my first real attempt at this type of photography, so i expect there's all sorts things that i could do better here!
Anyway, i was quite pleased with the result from my humble Sigma 300mm, so i thought i'd share this anyway.

Hopefully i have the ID right, but please let me know if i am wrong.

Idea leuconoe:

This species was thought to have gone extinct from Singapore. Already a very rare butterfly even in Malaysia, Idea leuconoe chersonesia is a seashore species known to only make its appearance deep in mangrove swamp vegetation. Although there were several unconfirmed reports of its sighting at Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong in the late 80's, no confirmed observation of its existence was obtained until recently, where this photograph of the species was taken with a digital camera. It was indeed a pleasant surprise to record the existence of Idea leuconoe chersonesia in Singapore.
Idea leuconoe chersonesia is a black and white butterfly like the other species of the genus Idea, but the marginal and submarginal spots are conjoined to form an irregular black band, and the wing bases are yellow-tinted. Like the other Idea species, the butterfly glides gracefully amongst the treetops and floats like a piece of paper. The butterfly is believed to be distasteful to predators.

Thanks for looking..

detalles y color, agradable escena,
saludos

Hi Paul,

Great picture with stunning detail, good natural colours and light and a very nice composition.

Kind regarrds,

Mike

Now this one Paul is exceptional. It meets all criteria for any nature photographer. You do not post every day but you take your time and make sure what you posts are up to standards and sometimes above the norm. I could stretch my mind but would not find any error technically. Your notes are interesting and complete. A fine piece of work kind sir. I bow to your post...and now shall salute it with a small sip if it does not bother.
Sincere regards
Bob

Hi Paul
Wonderful exposure for bright conditions with great sharpness and detail. You did great for first attempts, nice composition the butterfly laying flat on the leaf. Against the green the butterfly really stands out well.
Would a crop up from the bottom to bring the butterfly down slightly be something to consider? I like how the wing fits the same shape as the leaf and a crop would remove that visual shape, but then I'm wondering if really you need all the bottom of the leaf as the butterfly is the subject, individual preference only, wonderful image.

Hi Paul

I saw this picture yesterday, bit didn't really have time to comment anything on it. (to be honest...i watched the matches from teh Champions League :)
This is a very good macro, especially taking into consideration that it's among your first.
The lens you used is rather good for this type of photography. I too have it but i'm still a novice with it, however i've seen members here who have come to master it and pull out some amazing shots.
Anyway, back to the picture: the sharpness is terrific. You selected the right amount of DOF and you manage to keep the entire butterfly in great focus.
The pose in which you captured your subject here is great, too - with its wings widely spread and showing off its lovely pattern and colors.
Lighting and exposure are very good and the vertical compo is nice as well.
So i would say this is a spot-on start for yet another new chapter for you :)

Bravo and TFS

Hi Paul,
It is such a great surprise to see a butterfly post from you but such a wonderful one at that too. Very beautiful. Superb lighting, exposure and POV. The green leaf acts as a perfect BG. Very nicely composed, hope to see many more of these. Kudos.
TFS.

Hello Paul,
I think this is an excellent first attempt! I like your composition with the whole leaf left in the picture and I like the diagonal position of the butterfly. Sharpness is great and colours beautiful. Well done!
TFS and regards, Ulla

Hi Paul,
Great to see some diversity in your gallery. Not that I am bored with the stunning seascapes, but it nice to see that you are also experimenting with other types of photography.
There is not much I can say about this photo other than this is has great details, stunning color and light and a perfect DOF.
TFS,
Niek
