[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Well according to the books this Magpie Moth (Abraxas grossulaiata) caterpillar is a little early it still being April. Normaly May is when the emerge from over wintering as a caterpillar, having hatched late in the summer. they then procced to eat them selves silly on a wild variety of hedge row plants, but what they really love is soft fruit bushes such as fruiting currant and Gooseberries which can be stripped of leaves making this not welcome in the garden. The distinctive black with yellow striped chrysalis is to be found tied down with silk to the surface of a leaf in early July emerging in Late July -August and is to be seen on the wing in Day light and is the same colour as the caterpillar, basically white but splashed /spotted with black yellow and oranges.
The caterpillar is what the americans call an Inch worm and we call Looper caterpillar. This is because it only has 2 pairs of Prolegs at the rear so to move it grips the branch with the front legs the makes an arch with it's body. grabs the branch with the prolegs and releases with the 6 normal ones and reaches forward to full stretch, and keeps doing this making a series of loops.
Hope you like.

Wow, have you done a great job with this one, Rob! Can feel the texture of that caterpillar! The shine in his eyes matches that on the leaves of the plant. Most impressive shot!

Ack, I know I posted a critique on this but it is not here, I must be doing something wrong...but you are doing everything right Robert :). Lovely image and useful notes too, thank you for posting. Reminds me of the Mullein moth (for the white with black splotches) but I just checked one of my books and it seems they are not related.

Crazy looking catapillar Rob. Exellent composition and POV. Light is handled well. Nice one.

Thank you Robert. I like the 'n' of the caterpillar.

This one has a lovely look to it, Robert. I enjoy the "cats" but don't seem to get them in the wild. Technical... not nits just wish it was mine. :)
