Hi Nicholas!

For a first attempt, you did very well! Your Chaffinch is really beautiful. The exposure settings (really 1/2000?) exolain the sharpness and richness of details although the bird is moving. Maybe that the impression of moving would be accentuated with a more detailed background.

How did you manage this? This is amazing. There things fly so quickly that it's near impossible to catch them in flight without specialist equipment. I'm sure you get this published.

Looks like the F/5 worked very well for you here.
Excellent POV, color, exposure, BG, inflight pose and sharp details..
Hard to give you any advice..I don't have a clue from your note what techinique you used to get this one :)

Hello Nick
I have been thinking about these shots as you have...and you now have the 180mm fast lense and the 40d with the 6.5 frames a second....I think you could go down to a couple of stops and still retain a shutter speed high enough (balanced with the iso settings) to get those lovely wings crisp..and as summer comes the sun will obviously play its part!!
Its a Fantastic shot Nick and a very well planned one...11/10!!

I can't give you any advice on this superb shot of a landing Chaffinch: the sharpness and lighting are near to perfect and the composition, POV and wing position excellent. All this, coupled with a fine contrasting OOF natural BG make this a first class image.

This bird is maybe common but how cute is he!!!

Excellent in-flight shot of this nice bird... The body is perfectly in focus and sharp and the wings just perfectly blurred in order to show the motion... Great bg also enhancing so well the bird and excellent exposition...

You get also a great POV in order to obtain that shot!

Wow Nick, what a great and graceful action shot! Top marks! You had a nice fast shutter speed and I am amazed at the F5 aperture, works well with this lens. Perfect focus and dof, excellent colour, light with good detail and sharpness. Nicely framed and great composition. I would love to see more as I find the inflight shots difficult.

Bravo Nicholas, superb shot, I love the movement of the bird ready to touch down, and the perfect background creamy and smooth as butter. Lucky you with such a first inflight shot!!!! Hi Nick,
I have not been visiting TN quite often as i would like to and after looking at pictures of ppl like you, I feel that i have lot of catching up to do.
This is a super shot and the colors are just excellent. As far my exp goes 180mm sigma is one of the most versatile lens that you can get and once you get used to it, it will give you very good results.
