This is my second try at inflight small bird shots. I have found the Chaffinch seems to take its time in landing giving you more chance of a shot. I liked this one because it shows the tail feathers open and the outside of the wing. I would have liked a bit more space under the bird but it was just about to land on a pile of food . This was taken on Sunday in the New Forest with my 180 sigma .

Chaffinch ( Fringilla coelebs ) One of the commonest and most widespread birds in Britain, favouring a wide variety of habitats including gardens, parks and woodland. In winter numbers are boosted by the influx of north european birds. Song comprises a descending trill with a characteristic final flurish. Feeds mainly on Insects during the summer months but seeds in the winter where they often gather in large flocks

Hi Nicholas.
Second in-flight shot is so amazing as first one. Superb timing, terrific sharpness of the bird and stunning smooth perfectly coloured BG. Fantastic use of macro lens. Is really USM lenses have high speed AF on macrolens? Bravo. Great shot.

Hello Nick,
What an amazing photo! Perfect timing with a wonderful pose. The light on the Chaffinch is splendid. Excellent colours and BG. Perfect sharp details.

Hi Nick,

What can I say; you have mastered this exceptionally difficult art, and art it is. I managed to a couple of shots, but the shutter speed was just too low. I'll keep trying though. This is truely great work.

Mike

Hello Nick,
Now we start to enjoy your excellent work of inflight bird from a great photographer!
Just beautiful in everything - sharpness, warm colouration and perfect details in the shot
my compliment

Hi Nicholas!

You soon will be a specialist of that kind! Also this second "inflight"is marvellous and I recognized your style already from the thumbnail. If I may do a suggestion: for moving pictures, it could be valuable to try another background than a blurred one, in order to underline the effects of the movement. Here, one has a bit the feeling that the bird is sticked to a indefinite background, like in a studio. I believe that the impact of the movment could be improved by a more realistic background.

These considerations to not change anything to the fact that it is a marvellous picture!

Kind regards

Markus

Hello Nicholas,
Fantastic in flight shot, great timing and nice composition, excellent sharpness and good depth of field, very nice colors and good light.

Reminds me of a jet plane coming in with flaps down. I still have not managed a good in-flight shot. Your focus and timing were perfect here. Great BG.

Hi Nick,
Another great catch from you. In this picture the golden light in the BG is superb. Details, timing and colours first class.

Hello Nicholas,

Excellent shot. Great sharpness. Great timing. The light and the colours are superb.

Nic, What a brilliant picture. Nice colors. Excellent sharpness even at F4. I have never shot birds with my Sigma 180. I should explore.

Did you pre-focus on a spot to get the picture in focus or relied on Canon 40D to focus the bird for you?

- Murali Santhanam

It's certainly keeping its eyes on the food, Nick!

This is superb! There is no blurring and the details are superb! It is so good to see how the use of the tail and wings slows the bird down! Well done!

kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Nick

Hi Nick

It seems you are already an expert in shooting birds with a macro lens...my compliments!
This is a splendid in-flight - much better in my humble opinion than your first.
I love the sharpness on the bird here as well as the interesting pose you managed to get. The light was really great here, too and it made sure you got just the best colors for this :)
I'm just wonderring a bit about the composition. I know it's difficult to think about it when shooting in-flights, but having such a brilliant result, i would have been tempted to add a bit more canvas in the lower part and clone some more BG there... What do you think? :)
Anyway, gorgeous job!

BRAVO and TFS

Wow Nick,
This is great!!!
Your timing was great, you froze the bird in a very nice pose and with nice sunlight on the bird against a nice coloured bg.
Well done!!
Paula

Hi Nick,
Splendid shot. I'll have to get out on the sunny days and try my hand at birds, instead of last summer's butterflies. Thanks.
Alan

Hi Nicholas,
I don't know it you misunderstandings things, a macro lens
is for macros, not for in-flight shots.;-)
It's a great shot with almost perfect stop-action.
Very good sharpness, details and lovely colours.
Great work.

Hello Nicholas, this is a spectacular landing. I like it, like you write, I like the spreaded feathers with a light movement, they are so beautiful. It seems your new macro lense is very versatile and you know how to use it! the background is superb, the colours are striking and I love the light. It looks like summer light! Thanks Nicholas!
