I photographed these two fighting Pin-Tail Ducks at a large pond in Cotswold Wildlife Park.

I hope you like this one!

Latin name
Anas acuta

Family
Swans, ducks and geese (Anatidae)

Overview
Slightly bigger than a mallard, these long-necked and small-headed ducks fly with a curved back pointed wings and a tapering tail, making this the best way to distinguish them from other ducks in the UK. The pintail is a 'quarry' species, meaning that it can be legally shot in winter, but - unlike in parts of Europe - it does not appear that shooting is affecting their population status in the UK. The small breeding population and significant winter population make them an Amber List species.

Where to see them
A localised species, pintails occur sheltered coasts and estuaries. Particularly large concentrations found on sites such as the Dee Estuary, Solway Estuary and Ouse Washes.

When to see them
All year. Wintering birds arrive from September with numbers peaking in December. The return migration takes place from late February into March.

What they eat
A variety of plants and invertebrates.

Thankyou for any comments.

Hi Joe!

If you wouldn't tell, I would think they are in love... Whatever, the picture and the ducks are nice, I'm impressed by the richness of the details, the sharpness is perfect. Moreover, the whole picture is held in the same color tone. This makes it an outstanding one.

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Joe,

If they are fighting they still look fond of one another. What a great shot this is! Wonderful timing to get them in this pose. You froze the action perfectly with excellent details of the ducks. Lovely natural colors. I see that one is banded but not the other.

Jane

Very nicely done, Joe! Excellent detail! Just beautiful! Cheers, Klaus

Two sumo fighters ;-) They don't really look mad even though the pose suggests a fight. They are truly beautiful and I like the flash/snapshot effect, as I guess it was getting dark and yet, the picture shows up very well. Nice details and colours, Joey, thank you again,

Francine

Hi Joe, if you didn't tell us they were fighting I would have thought this was an affectionate pose, though looking closer I see one duck has the other by the throat. Ouch, that's gotta hurt.

The thing that struck me first about this shot was your composition and the way you've cropped the shot in a squarish format to put the one duck's tail right down in the corner, then cropped it off with the other ducks head and tail. I wish they'd sell cheap flexible frames and matts so we could always do this sort of thing with prints. Your light is excellent, I don't know if it's sunlight directly on the birds or flash. It doesn't matter, it worked. The colour and detail pulled out with this light is very good. Nice presentation.

Thanks, John

Hi Joe,
Magnifique, quelle belle prise de vue, superbe composition et très beaux détails.
Bravo

Hi Joe

Great shot - really nice detail and colour. The eyes are really good too.

I have not seen any Pintails this winter - we normally have them on the Washes - Tufted Duck on the other-hand have suddenly popped up everyehere.

I am so far behind on this site. I used to come here every single day but lately I just don't have the time. Maybe things will slow down for me. :)

A great shot - - - love the details in the feathers and the interesting lighting. Well done!

Hello Joe,
Actually I thought this is flash at first sight.
Apparently not.
Sun generated a great image here. Actually you did:-).
Very good depth of field allowing the viewer to get both animals razor sharp.
Good moment through the communication between these animals...
TFS

Lovely photo, Joey! Super lighting, well defined, great catch light in the eyes and the action captured quite lovely... I, too, think it might be courtship rather than fight.
