This is a scanned slide. I deliberately took this shot into the sun - I liked the pattern the penguins made standing on the small islands in the braided river. The brown wooly ones are chicks - as it was quite a warm day (relatively) they are standing in the icy water to stop overheating.

Salisbury Plain (543′S, 3721′W) is an area on the main island of South Georgia, on the north coast. Over 200,000 king penguins breed here, and this is what the area is best known for.

It is a small plain lying between the mouths of Grace and Lucas Glaciers on the north coast of South Georgia. The name appears to be first used on a 1931 British Admiralty chart.

Very striking, high-contrast, shot of this massive colony of Penguins!
Excellent detail and sharpness.
I love how the gaps in the flocks of Penguins draw the eye into the photo.
Very good lighting.
Well done James!!!!

Hi James,

An amazing sight! It's fascinating to see so many penguins in their groups. They look like soldiers ready for battle. An excellent composition capturing all of them.

Witaj Jamesp,
Amazing view! I thank that I could him see.

Once Love showed me a picture similar to this, with thousands of penguins, published in National Geographic. As I don't see well without my glasses, Love said, "Look, Woodstock" and I really thought it was shot at Woodstock... I looked at the picture, thought there was a lot of people but thought it strange that they were all dressed in black and white ;-) This is a superb shot James, I lovethe design made by the penguins too on those islands, it's almost an urban scene! Fantastic, thank you,

Exellent sharpness and detailed.
Good composition.

Hello James,
The whole army of Penguins is here, what a awesome view and truly appreciated for the sharing!
very good image with excellent lighting from the sun, good colour and details
well done
best regards

Hello James,
This is amazing, and who said penguins are an endangered species, hehehe!
What we see here must be the origin of the word "crowded"...
Again, an amazing scenery, well framed!
Pablo -

Very nice crowd shot James. I like the lighting, and the great sharp detail you've pulled out of this one. Colour is very good, very natural looking. What an awesome sight.

Thanks, John

Hello James,

What an incredible and highly unusual shot!
I wonder why the make such definite formations! Is it due to the thickness, and therefore the temperature, of the ice, is it family groupings, or purely random!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

HI James
An awesome shot. It is busy yet interesting and the dynamics of the stream make for good composition.

Hi my friend James,
Superb shot in all respects my friend!
