Thought i'd post something a bit different today. I noticed this lone Water Lilly floating quietly in the middle of a dark brackish pool whilst out for an evening stroll the other day, at a nature reserve close to where i live called Hengistbury Head. You can see a shot from there in my last post.
In order to get close enough for a decent shot, i had to lean right out over the water with my friend keeping a tight hold of my waste..a bit precarious perhaps, but i had to try to capture it, as i love it's reflection in the water.

Scientific classification:

Kingdom: Plantae

Division: Angiospermae

Order: Nymphaeales

Family: Nymphaeaceae

Nymphaeaceae is a family of flowering plants. Members of this family are commonly called water lilies and live in freshwater areas in temperate and tropical climates around the world. The family Nyhmpaeaceae contains 8 genera. There are about 70 species of water lilies around the world. The genus Nymphaea contains about 35 species across the Northern Hemisphere. The genus Victoria contains two species of giant water lilies and can be found in South America. Water lilies are rooted in soil in bodies of water, with leaves and flowers floating on the water surface. The leaves are round, with a radial notch in Nymphaea and Nuphar, but fully circular in Victoria.

Horticulturally, water lilies are divided into two main categories: hardy and tropical. Hardy water lilies bloom only during the day, but tropical water lilies can bloom either day or night, and are the only group to contain blue-flowered plants.

Water lilies can be fragrant, such as Nymphaea odorata.

The white water lily, such as the one you can see here, is the national flower of Bangladesh. It is also the birth flower for July.

Hope you like it, thanks for looking...

Hi Paul.
I am impressed with created by you three-dimensional image of a very nice flower. Lights, reproduction of colour and light tones of the original object and its mirror reflection are splendid. Crisp sharpness of the details are so impressive as well as nice dark surroundings as a wonderful decoration of the main subject. Refined work of extra-class. Bravo.

Hi Paul,
Lovely photo of this elegant flower. Dark background makes the subject stand out very well. I like the way you handle the light. TFS

There is so much beauty in simplicity. and sometimes in close in simplicity there is an ironic complexity as well..almost self canceling but not. Complex, yet still simple...can't beat it with a stick!

Hello Paul, my day's neighbour,
A delightful portrait of white Waterlily flower taken from a great POV with a fine DOF and sharpness together with its reflection in the dark water that provides a superb contrast. Pleasing composition with a hint of a lilly pad to complete the picture.
TFS this beauty,

I've run out of time!

Will be back tomorrow.

Hi Paul,

You have given this lily a new life. The reflection is stunningly clear, the lily is a cracker... your control over the light and reflection is impressive.... fine work, tfs regards h

On the road now with slow connection. Just marking up the best ones this time.

Hello Paul,

Hi Paul

The water here must be very pure - the native white water lily has all but disappeared from the Fens and Broads because of high fertiliser run-off. Greta composition with superb lighting. Well worth the risk!!

Hello Paul,
Very impressive capture! The water lily is well presented,
very sharp, and well composed.. Beautiful reflection
..Well done

Hi Paul!

Is it a mirror or is it really water? What a great effect! It's superb, well seen and well composed. The lighting - certainly not easy with the white petals - is perfect, the petals have kept their details. Oh, and it's a pleasure to see another "PaulH" for a change!

Kind regards

Hello Paul,
I've often seen one of these wonderful Water Lilies, but nearly always a little bit too far out so I recognise the situation! But you didn't fall in and managed to get a splendid capture of this Lily with a fine reflection in the brown brackish water. Great sharpness and beautiful colours. Well done!
Many thanks, Ulla

Nice shot with great contrast and exposure/whites handled well tfs rgds Necip

Hi Paul,
I came back and spent 5 minutes patching out the surrounding black.
Consider it my critique...with a smile :)

Hello Paul

A lovely composition with lovely contrast and lighting.
The reflections are beautiful.
Excellent focus and sharpness.
The pov is very good.

Well now... this is different. I have done similar gymnastics to get a shot. Holding your new camera over water could be risky. I think the reflection in your photo is so wonderful. Your water lily just glows. Nice work.

Evelynn : )

Hello Paul,

Certainly unusual but very well executed.
It is very difficult to determine where the flower ends and its reflection begins!
The flower is perfectly placed and shows off well against the dark b/g.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Paul! Very simple composition but a very effective one, I like the sharp details, the great exposure and the dark waters, thanks my friend!

Bonjour Paul,

Hi Paul,
So different from what we are used to, but certainly a beauty. I especially like the contrast between the very dark water and the flower. It does give great focus on the subject. Although I like to see a photo as it was in front of the lens. I do like the cleaning up Howard did as well. Exposure on the flower and details are spot on.
