Thought i'd have a go capturing some birds for a change, so i took a walk to the Hengistbury Head side of Christchurch harbour yesterday to see what i could find.
As it happens, not much, as the place was crawling with people out enjoying rhe sunshine, which meant that almost all the wildlife was tucked away safely in the reeds in the centre of the harbour, save for a few crows, black head gulls and this lone Egret, who was busy patroling the shore line in search of lunch. Every now and then a dog walker or family would give him cause to take flight and fly a hundred metres or so to quieter waters, so i positioned myself in some shadow a little distance away and waited for him to be driven my way.
After about 10 minutes, sure enough he was disturbed once again and headed straight in my direction, landing right in front of me! Bit of a lucky shot really, but not one i usually manage to get so i'm pretty pleased to have got it. The strange strips of light over the body are the reflections of ripples in the water..

From the RSPB website:

Latin name:

Egretta garzetta

Bitterns and herons (Ardeidae)

The little egret is a small white heron with attractive white plumes on crest, back and chest, black legs and bill and yellow feet. It first appeared in the UK in significant numbers in 1989 and first bred in Dorset in 1996. Its colonization followed naturally from a range expansion intro western and northern France in previous decades. It is now at home on numerous south coast sites, both as a breeding species and as a winter visitor. It is included on the Amber List as rare breeding species.

Where to see them:

A recent colonist, it is most commonly found along the south coast, and on parts of the east coast. The estuaries of south Devon and Cornwall; Poole Harbour and Chichester Harbour hold some of the largest concentrations and birds can be seen right round to North Norfolk.

When to see them:

All year round, although numbers incease in autumn and winter as birds arrive from the Continent.

Thanks for looking...

Hi Paul
Maybe a little lucky, but you planned ahead for it so well done a great action shot. Nice exposure and well focused.
Kind Regards
PS - it was heaving around Blashford Lakes at Ringwood yesterday too!

The blue and white REALLY set this one out well Paul. I would say you did get a bit lucky as you say...having it so close-in and all.....it sure pumps up the volume on the sharpness....glad you were all set to let it click...Excellent!

Hello Paul,
What a perfect timing! Fantastic. Amazing beautiful colours and sharpness. The details in the white are great. Splendid contrast against the blue water. Also a very good POV and composition.

Hi Paul. This is a fine shot of the Egret coing in to land. Great detail in the featehrs with fine exposure in the whites.well done TFS. Interesting notes too.

Brilliant capture of this Egret Paul.
You've frozen the action perfectly.
Very good exposure showing us plenty of clear detail including the reflection of the ripples on the wings.
Great job mate!
ps .... I lived in the city of Christchurch here in NZ for years and never realised that there was a Christchurch in Dorset too.
The Avon is also the river flowing through Chch NZ .... and we have guys in straw boaters taking tourists on punts too.

hello Paul

Wow ! you did an excellent shot of the little egret
with shooting the image at the right moment,
fine POV and framing, beautiful luminosity,
excellent sharpness and details, TFS

Hi Paul,
Great shot of Little Egret coming down. Excellent POV and composition, sharp details with good lighting so lots of small details displayed well; excellent capture of movement.

I bet you could never do that again... get an egret landing with just his toes touching the water but not yet breaking the surface!! ...too cool! Were you panning for this shot. It's funny some action shots 1/1000 is enough to freeze it and sometimes it takes 1/4000. Every feather looks sharp.

Hello Paul,

You have got a very nice moment with this bird landing on water surface. Despite the obvious movment of the bird you did a very sharp image showing very good details of the bird. As you have used so well the light fine color tones have been rendered showing the plumage in great detail.

Thank you for sharing,

Hi Paul.
It is really amazing picture. All is great. Especially I like fantastic reproduction and exposure of the bird feathers, razor sharpness and details (timing is the best) and blameless cropping. Bravo. Well done.

Hallo Paul

A very nice composed shot with warm colours, great sharpness and details. Framing, composition and presentation are great. A delightful image which I enjoyed looking at. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Paul!

You have created a pleasant suprise! It's an unusual picture for you, so well done and crystal clear. It's the proof (if necessary) that you are a great photographer and not only tied to one type of pictures. I love the dynamics in the picture very much!

Kind regards

Hi Paul

This is indeed a wonderful shot my friend and quite a different one from landscapes in general :) I guess i'm sometimes trying to alternate them as well.

The "sit and wait" method apparently helped you here and got you a very beautiful landing. The pose of the wings is terrific and the sharpness of the head is impeccable. Too bad the legs aren't like that...but i would have never thought that 1/1000 wouldn't be enough for this; however, you can alway go for the motion motif because they definitely add some dynamism to the scene.
Other than that, i can only say that the exposure is simply perfect (the beautiful whites came out superbly) and that the bird looks great on that all blue BG.
Wonderfully composed and presented, too.

Bravo and TFS

Hi Paul

What, no fancy filters :)

Hello Paul, I think you have made a little too tight crop here on the bottom. But yet the color is superb and fine. Ganesh

Excellent exposure & color Paul, nice details throughout.
Wonderful action shot & POV/comp of this great landing pose :)
Well done!

WOW! great capture of this lovely Egret, fantastic action, nice timing, superb sharpness and depth of feild, beautiful colors, good exposure and nice clarity.
well done.

Hello Paul,

A great moment to take this flying bird in landing position. Amazing shot. What a clarity and brightness. Wonderful. You can see the speed from the bird. Take for instance a look to the feathertail. That curls all the way through the speed.

Well done. Best regards and TFS BOB
