Here's a shot from Summer of a pair of Flesh Flies :-)

I hope you like it!

Flies of the Diptera family Sarcophagidae (from the Greek sarco- = flesh, phage = eating; the same roots as the word "sarcophagus") are commonly known as flesh flies. Most flesh flies breed in carrion, dung, or decaying material, but a few species lay their eggs in the open wounds of mammals; hence their common name. Some flesh fly larvae are internal parasites of other insects. These larvae, commonly known as maggots, live for about 5-10 days, before descending into the soil and maturing into adulthood. At that stage, they live for 5-7 days.

Thanks!

Hi Joe

I'm so very much looking forward to shoot such macros, too!
I've ordered a Sigma 150mm macro and i've had a Kenko 2x TC that i haven't been using...together they should me a strong "weapon" :)
Anyway, excellent shot here!
The magnification is terrific and the details you managed to get by using this big DOF is great. I particularly like their eyes that stand out so well from this scene.
Good use of the flash here as well.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Hi Joe,
Amazing orange eyes. I guess if you would study pathology you would get very familiar with these guys, especially ages of their larvae etc. Very good close-up capture of action; good POV, composition, fine sharp details.

Cheers and greeting from Finland!

hi Joe

At your age, you are very promising to take notice of such array of nature's subjects and doing a good job of photographing them.

This is a great moment to capture as close up to show the flies in rare position and you have them head on. Good sharpness and color. The converter works well.

Impressive work.

tfs, bill

Hi Joe,
to be honest, this is not your best shot with the sigma macro-lens but it was taken in May and I have seen much better since.
The flash has given a to hard light and the contrast is also to high. It's not easy to use the flash for a fill in but take a look at Howard's macros he use the fill-in as master.
But the composition and POV are nice and the details are pretty good too.
Gert

The orange eyes of Flesh Flies are their most attractive feature, Joe, and you have shown this very well in this shot.
Apparently, the female of this species is bigger than the male.
Thanks for sharing this excellent shot.
Also, Merry Christmas!
Ram

Hi Joe

What amazing coloured eyes they have, positively evil.
Good composition and sharpness.

Hope you and your family have a safe and happy festive season.

Chris

A fine double-capture, regarding the viewpoint of those flies trying to propagate their breeds Joe, you have masterfully isolated their startling eyes here my friend, TFS indeed!
Mehmet

Bonito trabajo con un acertado formato. La luz del flash hizo que sus ojos se asemejen más bien a algún ser extraterrestre jajaja pero también contribye a una toma muy especial por sus contrastes y colorido.
Un saludo: J.Ignasi.
