[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Here's a close-up of a Four-spotted Chaser that I photographed using a Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 1-5x Macro with a Canon MT-24EX Speedlite attached - I was borrowing the lens and flash for a few weeks.
This is a focus-stacked image so I took three photos which were focused on slightly different areas of the dragonfly, (for example, one photo was focused on the eye, one on the left half of the head and one on the right half), and then blended them together to give a much greater depth-of-field than you would get with one photo at this kind of magnification.

I hope you like it!

Hey Joe and nice to see you back

At first, i thought you bought this impressive lens...i would have been soooo jealous!!!! :))
This is an impressive macro shot and with a pretty interesting and new technique - this focus stacking. We have a new member here - Alistair Campbell - who's really good at that and actually has a MP-E...boy he's good!
Anyway, i really like what you pulled out here...the details are fantastic, the resulted DOF immense for this magnification and the light excellent.
Wonderful work, mate!

Bravo and TFS

I'm thinking of buying a Speedlite for macros as well....

Hello Joe!

Great to see you posting again, my young friend :-) This is one of best supermacros of dragnfly head I've ever seen. I started to wonder how you achieved so great result with MP-E than read your note. Technique with stacking photos works superb! Which software did you use? I do something similiar with astronomy photos but not for better DOF but for more light from poor light sources like distant stars. Anyway - superb work!

Hi Joe .That was some lens set up you had on with the ring flash. You have done some fine work in Adobe Photoshop CS3 which some member may not like to much but you have not tried to hide it . For me i think its a fantstic macro how ever it was taken . the focusing and detail is second to none. With rich colours .Good work Joe. TFS.

Hello Joe,
A top class close macro, professionally executed with the photo stack technique to achieve this superb DOF coupled with excellent sharpness throughout. Your use of fill-in flash is superb.
The thumb-nail first made me think that this was an ordinary close macro, but i was wrong: this is an extraordinary and professional presentation of the head of Libellula depressa and I thank you for that!
Photography of what is left of our natural world is obviously your future!
