Male Chalkhill Blue Butterfly (Polyommatus coridon)

The male Chalkhill Blue is paler and, apart from the Large Blue, larger than other blue butterflies seen in Britain and Ireland.

At some sites many hundreds may be seen in August, flying just above the vegetation, searching for females. Large numbers of males may also congregate on animal dung and other sources of moisture and minerals. Females are much less conspicuous, being duller in colour, more secretive in their habits, and spending less time than the males in flight.

The butterfly is confined to calcareous grassland in southern England and has declined in some areas during recent decades.

The sole foodplant is Horseshoe Vetch (Hippocrepis comosa).

The Blue is common but not your photo ;-) The composition is simple and smart. The blurred background and colors are soft. The butterfly is well detailled. Thanks for sharing Matt.

It,s a nice one Matt,
the composition is good taken, the pov is good, the dof is perfect. Yes I like this blue one. very good job, with my compliments for it,
gr. jaap

Good to see a different type of blue, it is well seen against the blurred BG, though the lower wings could do with being a fraction sharper IMO, they seem to be just dropping out of focus, maybe another half stop would of got it pin sharp all over and kept the BG perfect. TFS Robert

Good close-up of this Chalkhill Blue... Structures of the butterfly are all crisp and clear, great sharpness! Background is good blurred and does a good contrast to the blue insect!
Very well done!

Beautiful shot, Matt. That single shaft breaking through the blurred background gives a strong visual impact. The butterfly has gorgeous details and colors. Well done and TFS. : )

Hi Matt

This is a lovely composition. The colours are subtle and very calm. Lovely to view. Nice POV, clearity and sharpness. Congrats!
