Another archive photo that I thought I'd upload before I get fed up of seeing it!

Taken at one of my favourite haunts, the lion viewing enclosure at Whipsnade Wild Animal Park.

African Lion
(Panthera leo)

Habitat
Lions are found in Africa and the Gir Forest of India. Lions roam in open country, grasslands and plains.
Size & Description
Male lions grow to 9 feet long and weigh 400-500 pounds. Females grow to 8 feet and 300 pounds. Lions have a light brown, tawny color.
Diet
In the wild lions eat buffalo, antelope, giraffe and zebra. In the zoo their diet consists of a processed meat product.
Interesting Facts
The female lion (lioness) does almost all the hunting.
Lions live in groups called prides, dominated by one male, with several females and their cubs.
Their solid, tawny colors blend in well with the savanna surroundings.
Male lions have a mane and a tufted tail; females do not.
Unlike other felines, lions do not stalk prey; they lie in wait and attack by surprise.
In the wild lions sleep about 20 hours a day.
The lion's roar is used to communicate and to declare territory.
In the wild lions can eat up to 65 pounds of meat in a day, but they don't need to eat every day.
Lions have a 110-day gestation period.
Lions live about 15 years in the wild and 20-24 years in captivity.

What a fantastic portrait, the color and DOF are perfect. You should meet up with Alan Turvey (liquidsunshine) and visit Whipsnade together; he goes all the time. Have a great rest of your week.

Hi Andy,

This is a very nice portrait of this lioness. Details and focus are razorsharp and the colors are very natural. It would have been nice if the bg wouldn't have had almost the exact same colortone as the lioness itself as she would have stand out from the bg more that way. Anyway, it's a great shot. I really envy you for the sharpness of this L-lens. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter
