[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
According to some sources this is "Vanessa cardui", others say "Cynthia cardui" is the correct name.

The common name is the Painted Lady butterfly and this one decided that breakfast was more important than escaping from my lens.

Not normally a UK resident, they migrate from northern Africa and southern Europe each spring, although a few hardy ones may survive a mild winter in sheltered spots.

The larvae feed on a number of plants including thistles, mallows and some legumes. The adults can often be found nectar feeding on thistles as was this one that modelled for me.

Taken with a 13mm extension tube behind the lens to reduce focussing distance.

hi Norman,

i like a lot this.
the you put in the lateral the butterfly.
his face is very sharp and create a good 3D expresion.
so a good POV, DOF and a clean BG.

Hi Norman,
fantastic picture, great colours, composition and nice framing!

Hi Norman,
Cynthia or Vanessa, whatever her name - she is pretty!
Main parts (eyes, lips, legs, and antennae) perfect on focus,
beautiful natural light, and well controlled pleasantly soft colours.
Exciting pose, taken from a winningly low angle, looking eye to eye with that beauty. Certainly not an ideal point of view to picture a butterfly in the classical way with wings sharp, but a perfect point of view to turn a butterfly into a character.
Thank you! Best regards,

Hi Norman
