[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Well its exactly one year today, since I joined TN and in 2 days time 1 year since I bought my Canon EOS 350D, my first dSLR.

So what has changed since then?

Well this was the first landscape picture I posted.

What has changed? Quality of the picture goes without saying. That first landscape post was a scanned photo taken on a point and shoot camera - no settings could be changed at all, and this is a digital image to start off with.

Today, I would have had a polarising filter on, I would have definitely taken the same shot, and then created a set of footprints in the snow, to lead the eye into the picture. I would have included more sky... I woudl also have had less land and more sky... and probably the shots either side to create a panorama... What have I learnt? Way to much to cover here... but hopefully some of it will be obvious from the difference in the shots...

So what do we have with this picture. Well the exact opposite of that first picture.

A warm weather sunset... the more observant may also have noticed the faint colour changes in the sky to the right as well and the very observant will have picked it up in the water reflection. Well it was a Sundog and the at the time, I didn't even know I had seen it! It wasn't until I got the picture downloaded that I realised I had 'seen' one!

I appreciate that someone will be thinking why F/4? Well I was being eaten alive by midge and clegs (Scottish Horse Flies) at this point (water either side of me, sweat, warm weather, Scotland and sunset are not the best of combinations for avoiding midge. It was OK until you stopped walking to take a photo...) so I wanted something I could handhold and get a reasonable picture from... F/4.0 the first thing that came to mind... and it was a very quick photo...

I was kneeling down on the ground to get this picture, becuase I wanted to include something in the foreground and was struggling to fnd anything before the sun set and I lost the picture.

Anyhow - I shall finish waffling on and leave it at that...

Converted from RAW, cropped slightly. Colours are real and not enhanced... resize, slight sharpen and a frame added...

Yes as a country specialist, I think you can call me so, when you look to my work on TE here When I had a look to your photo's I can see the progression in your shot's and yes my opinion is when people want, he or she could learn from the side. Very nice greeting card you posted here - thanks a lot. I think you did a great job on this one. You got the colours right. the reflection of the sun is well framed in the pond and the silhouette of the hills work great in the background. Finally you remembered to keep the horizon out of centre. All over a very nice picture to look at - I love the atmosphere.

Hi Emma,
Congratulations on reaching that landmark. A great shot you have here, beautiful colours, great exposure and a really peaceful and calm image. Quite amazing DOF for f/4. I think including your first shot as part of this post is a great idea, the contrast between that image and this is very evident, the first shot is nice, but this is a very clean and professional looking image. Great work from you again and hope your broadband gets fixed soon.

Hi Emma,
Congratulations with the 1 year anniversary. This is an other beautiful photo of your Sundog series. I like the way you used the shoreline and boulders as the FG for more depth. The silhouttes of both the FG as well as the mountains in the back great, the golden brown colors gives this photo a real restful view.

Nicely done, Emma. A wonderful shot, with a great mix of elements. I especially like the limited Halloween color pallete here. Thanks for the links to your first piece, because I love to go back on these typoes of anniversaries (# shots or time) and see how folks have grown as photographers (which you clearly illustrate).

It is a fantastic photo! And yes, i can see the difference between your first shot and this one!
The sharpness, composiotion and exposure control is great. I love the silouette of the foreground and the straws in the water. Great colours too.
