Another visit to the Brown Argus Aricia agestis - an open-winged view posted here, with additional notes, yesterday.

After chasing these little characters around for several hours I found myself sitting on a grassy bank as the sun began to set. Within the next ten minutes dozens of these little butterflies settled around me, all resting head-down in the warm light of the setting sun. This communal roosting is known in a number of the Lycaenidae, but this was a unique experience for me. It's difficult to describe how contented I felt among these sleepy butterflies - all I can do is share a little photograph.

This butterfly is caught in the act of "shuffling" its hind wings (you can see part of the upper surface of the right hindwing), another characteristic shared with other lycaenids.

Handheld, no tripod - just elbows on the ground, manual exposure and focus (why does my camera have all those clever gadgets?), D-ISO 100.

PP - slight crop, a little work in "levels" to brighten the seed head and slight USM for posting.

Hi Nigel.

Perhaps the image is not sharp as I'd expected but it's obvious that you have a talented eye to see such a good composition. It's neatly and carefully organized. Nice shot.

Well Done & TFS.

Nice macro Nigel woth excellent composition, sharpness and DOF.

I like it a lot: composition, POV, DOF, sharpness, focus, color, framing, lighting, background.

I like it: notes.

I don't like it: nothing.

Only as a game, I made a Workshop eliminating the branch unfocused up to the right... I hope you like it.

Greetings... Ricardo

Hello Nigel,
Fine presentation of agestis underside, pretty sharp and well composed. The rest is a matter of opnion: more sharpening causes over-sharpening of the already sharp parts. Personally I would remove the smdge of a grass straw to the left but that's also a matter of opnion and taste.
TFS, regards, Ivan

Nice sharpness, wonderful details and excellent POV.

Hi Nigel,
This is a superb shot. The technical aspects are all excellent. The composition is what makes it special. Very unique and well done. It is sharp on my monitor, and I do think Ricardo's workshop helps. Great camera work here, and an artistic eye.

Yes Nigel, impressive macro, love your low POV. Tremendous details reveled on this beauty. Well done.

Hi Nigel
You've made really nice picture. I like especially the composition with the blue sky. Good colours and sharpness. Thanks

Chris

Hi Nigel,
another brilliant shot of Aricia agestis, showing the glittering scales of wings, and very well demonstrating the charming lycaenid habit of rubbing its wings against each other in a rotating way at rest, wonder why they are doing that - maybe activating some scenting scales on the surface of the upperside of wings?
Thank you! Best regards,
Peter
