[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It's been a while since I last posted a picture but it has been a busy year.

This Hummingbird Hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) on Red Campion was taken on Bempton Cliffs, North Yorkshire in June. I was lucky to be in the right place as migrating moths and butterflies came in off the sea in numbers stopping to feed and rest before continuing their journey inland. This year has been particularly good for migrants on the east coast of the UK and there have been many sightings of these fascinating moths which arrive from southern Europe and northern Africa.

To the beastie - the adult has a forewing of 20-24mm, is active by day, mainly in sunshine but occasionally at dusk or after dark. Larvae occur from June to October and foodplants include Lady's Bedstraw, Wild Madder and Red Valerian. Habitats include coastal areas, inland gardens and woodland rides and even window boxes!

In folklore, the moths are considered to be messengers of good tidings. I hope this one brings good tidings to you.

Hi Jax,
Nicely capturing this flying hummingbird. Blurry wings show fast movement of them. Nice DoF.

Hi Jax,

Great shot of the Hawk Moth, the compositon is good, the pose is really great as it shows the Moth feeding with its proboscis reaching right into the flower, the detail is nice and sharp and I like the blurry wings.
